Title: order from ray
Post by: sirloinofbeef001 on March 27, 2013, 08:47:02 am
I'm getting ready to order some stuff from ray and my question is, when ordering from him and you pay thru PayPal does the money somehow sit in escrow til the product is received?    or just PayPal alone....

If you use paypal your money is gone right away. If you are nervous at all you will need to use a credit card and go through the escrow account. I personally use payal and have had no issues for what it is worth.

Thanks guys. Last time I made an order, my wife ordered it and the part came to me destroyed. She returned them and will not do it for me now...

I placed my order fo 20x120 flex strips and 16x128 strings through ray last year. i paid with paypal. all arrived, i had one string that was defective. he sent another and did not ask for the defective one to be sent back.

it is scary thinking you are sending cash to someone in china. The reason so many people use ray he has shown to be reliable and trustworthy through the last couple of years. he must handle 100's of thousands of dollars each year. Since he posts all the invoices on his web page you can get an idea of some of the orders. one person ordered 100 strings of lights on a single order last year.

i will order through him again.

thanks
sean

I would never send cash... Its PayPal alone. I just remember ppl saying something about escrow before and I didn't wanna do that....

I think I did credit card and the escrow ... but Ray has been nothing buy reliable, honest and trustworthy.  When I got bad nodes (part of the early first year SS batch), he sent good replacement ones and some bonus stuff.  When he didn't have the 5amp power supply, he send me the 8.5amp for nothing extra.   I've placed 4-5 orders with him and no issues.  I usually pick the DHL shipping.

I ordered waterproof connectors through Ray, then realized I needed 3 wire vice 2 wire.  Had no problem changing the order and getting the right parts. I have subsequently bought several different things through his store using both the escrow and paypal, never a problem. FWIW <res.

Those of you that have used Paypal, do you still order from the website or do you do it directly to Rays Paypal address?  I'm only asking because I got a quote from him and his Paypal address is in the bottom of the quote.

Thanks!

several of you guys mentioned strings.  are these the smart strings aka cosmic ribbons?  What am I looking for on Ray's site if I want some to hang under the eaves of the house, do a face or two for singing, and then have a few leaping arches out on the grass in the rain?

The other stuff will be pretty protected.  I have to actually water the plants against the house as otherwise they die of thirst.

Cosmic ribbons are closer to what we call flex strips. Smart Strings are RGB nodes with wire between them. There are links in the WIKI which shows the difference and the recommended types. To be waterproof they need an IP68 rating.

Credit Card/Escrow four times now - twice in the past few weeks.  Use DHL for shipping

No problems - prompt and attentive

I have made many orders with Ray in the hundreds and thousands of dollars ranged. He is very trustworthy. And when I had problems with an item or it was the wrong item, Ray sends you replacements straight away. If the problem item isn't high dollar, you don't need to ship back.

If what you want is already in stock it is pretty fast. If it is a large or customized order it can take longer as it has to be made first. You might try emailing him to see if he has an eta.

Last time my order came DHL. I requested DHL, But it was shipped FedEx.

Is the bill related to an address correction they had to do on an international package?  A visit to the local fed ex office might be enlightening, and wallet lightening.

No address correction, They even had a copy of my invoice in the letter. Wonder what will happen when the rest of my order gets shipped? Will I be billed again? Keeping my documents.

How/why would they bill you after they already delivered? I just got my order in Tuesday with 5 cables short of the 4 core and 4 extra of the 3 core? haven't tested any of the lights yet as i still need the active hub and some ssc.

Customs Duty    $18.72
Advancement fee $6.50

I guess they gave me a lone??

All my stuff came DHL as well with no addons, but I suspect that the culprit may be the size of the order.  I have had multiple orders all under $500 each.  You might have saved enough on shipping one order vs multiple that with the $25 it was a wash, but hard to tell.  Customs charges are usually based on declared value and on the content type.

Order size drives this.

Sometimes it takes a little patience. If he has it on the shelf, it ships pretty quick. If not, he is at the mercy of his suppliers and it can take a while...

SOOOO  what did you get, lots of RGB stuff to play with?  Where is it going on the display?  How do you mount it all?  Curious newbies want to know to shorten our learning curves this season....

16 -smart strings for the mega tree. Need to build the controllers still.

Oh do tell, don't think I will make the rgb smart string plunge this year, but am waiting on the coop for the V4 controllers.  Which nodes did you decide to buy for the tree?  Not quite understanding the differences in the nodes yet.  Seems they talk different protocols depending if they are ws2811 or ws2801 or whichever they happen to be.  I've started looking at the packaging at box stores to see if the led strips they sell are 4 conductor or not!

I ordered the 75 count smart strings which is listed in the wiki ... not sure I'm gonna use them all on the mega tree yet. I think I'm gonna make the tree in a single profile vs the complete circle.. still not sure yet.
