Well it is a Interesting little toy I created for two purposes.
1 - I needed a clock for the workshop
2 - It serves as a great starter kit for users to build and learn to solder on, with all low voltage and through hole parts.
When it is complete you have a very accurate and interesting clock that will last a lifetime.
It is very basic in its operation and has two rings of leds. The outer ring displays the hours in red leds and the inner ring displays the seconds and minutes in green leds.
It uses a tempeture compensated tiem base to give it extremely good time keeping and runs off of a wall wart.
Once programmed the backp battery on board can keep time for 10 years with no power applied. Of course the leds do not display while it is unplugged but applying power puts it back in operation without losing a second.
I should have a few beta pcbs in about 2 weeks.

Did you make the clock so you finally will have "time" to sleep between projects? Looks like fun to make and a useful kit.
Thanks
Ron

OK, I gotta try this one! Great idea! Are you going to auction off the beta pcb's? ;D
-
Love it
What a fun little project. Shame I don't see a Dec 25th count down :'(
Cheers

I would be in for one of these.

Great!!
Another item from RJ that I can't resist. A great gift for every guys (gals) shop or garage.
I volunteer to be a beta tester. If I can put one together, anyone can.

Well geez Rick, as if many of us don't have enough pressure on to get stuff done... thereagain, the 25th would be a bit late for a shop clock count down.
In the spirit of feature creep, I'd like a lynx roar on the hour, growl on the half and maybe a meow on the quarter hour... Where does the prop mount? ...but alas, I'm still awaiting the Lynx Jumbotron too. ;D

ummmmm
i'm certain RJ just forgot to mention the DMX port....
after all you may want to put on a light show with it...
-
Ni RJ,
Can't wait to see it in action. If you need a beta tester let me know ;)
-
Cool project RJ,
Diameter?
-
9 inches.. Made the PCB a little expensive but smaller looked cheap.
RJ
-
I want one also. I can build this while I wait for RJ to come out with his freestanding controller next year.

Here goes another roll of solder!! Gota have it and I dont know why. Is this normal?
-
Is this normal?
I'm not sure, but soldering wasn't this much fun in school.

Nice

Totally agree, just made a power supply and a radio in school >:(
No blinky at all

Looks like a fun kit I would love to give it a try. At a minimum it will add a talking piece to the house/garage. ;D
Someone made a comment above but a "countdown to christmas" timer would be cool. Seen those go for way to much
-
I don't think that you would save much money on building your own countdown timer. Those large display panels are not cheap and by the time you print the board, purchase LED displays and the rest of the components including the case, you could easily pass the cost of just buying one. Mine cost me less than $50 and I doubt that I could build it for less.

Hey RJ,
I just noticed but the First outside LED the one by the Number 1 is positioned next to the 4th minute LED. All the others are every 5th LED/minute any reason for that? I'm talking about the 12 outside LED's :). Was that just for location purposes so you didn't have to squish the "1"

It was not possible to put the led in the middle of the number one and moving the number enough to give room made it look bad so I compramised.

Any thoughts on when this might go into Co-op? Might get a few of these as Christmas gifts....

I'd like a few of these kits. I'd be willing to run the Co-Op but I don't know if I'm OK to do it? What are the requirements?
-
And the coop is now open. Please note that it closes on 9/12 since RJ has to get the boards to me before he leaves.

Just a reminder - the coop closes tomorrow, 9/12 at 8PM. Then my fun really begins :-)

Someone other than RJ has the firmware for the clock, right?

No,
Thats my big going away prank this year! <fp.
Of course the people will have the firmware for it. ::)

This close to go time for your trip, I didn't want to bother you with trivial bs, big guy.
-
And the PICs in the COOP will be pre-programmed.

YOU THE MAN!
Thank You

Anybody know what the 8 pin connection at the top of the clock, next to the top .1uf capacitor, is for? If it has been discussed before I missed it, but it is not marked on the PCB.
Ron
-
Ron,
I don't think it is for anything. At least that we care about.
On another note, did you get your clock working?
-
It hasn't been discussed; that connector and the 100n cap next to it are unused in the current design. Looking at the pinout, I see Vcc, GND, and one line to the PIC. I'd guess either a radio module for setting the clock or some sort of an alarm, but that's just a guess.
/mike
-
It is not current used. It is for a possible future upgrade on my clock. ;D

RJ
Oh oh... lets see.... Seeing RJ's creativity and placement of the 8 pin.... I am guessing it is for a daughter board that will be mounted on the reverse side (like the power input) and will do a sound or chime on the hour?
So if i guess right do i get a beta PCB of said daughter board? ;D
Great clock and conversation piece, RJ.... <res.
PS: when will the RGB led clock be coming out?
-
You guys got it all wrong! That connection is for his next project. He is working on a FLUX CAPACITOR to make the clock work with time travel. <yk..
Ron
-
Now over a year later, can someone tell me if the clock will be available again? I imported over from LOR and PC so I'm new here......
-
You just missed a Coop for the clock. I would bet RJ or someone would have a PCB you could grab.
-
...what time is it? ;)
-
I would be in for one of these.
-
Pm me I have an two and would sell one if you are interested?
