Since LightShow Pro is so different than other sequencing applications on the market, it can take some time to figure out how to do some tasks, sometimes even simple ones. In this thread I am going to post tips and tricks on using LSP V2.
Setting up a simple DMX element using a Lynx Dongle. Shows how to setup, test and enter a few basic effects:

How to do ramping shimmers, fades and twinkles:

Even though hundreds and hundreds of bugs were fixed thoughout LSP V2's development, it's still possible that you may run into a problem that was not uncovered during beta testing. Want to know the secret to getting your issue resolved quickly? It starts with properly reporting it. Here is what I'd recommend doing if you run into a problem or have a feature request with LSP V2:

will you please report as a BUG, if your isp blocks outbound port 25 except to their own mail server, you can not use the bug reporting tool.....
He needs to change it to a http post function to a secure script on his website or something, I can not post any bug/feature requests via the program
Most ISPs block outbound port 25 except for their own mail server to prevent outbound spam from their networks....
Thanks

Done - this has been reported as issue #389 for a switch from port 25 to HTTP post.

In case you have not already done so - I highly recommend watching two of the videos from LightShow Pro that provide an overview of new V2 features:
http://www.vimeo.com/25802007
Glance at new features and functionality in the v2 version of LightShow Pro. including Advanced multipattern transitions, non-cliping video rotations, autonmous timings, pattern and effect transforms, active mouse mode, timing highlight layers !
http://www.vimeo.com/24250266
•converted files are a fraction of the size
•multi-threaded optimization queue
•sequencing performance.
•auto-blend feature in the rgb color selector.
•ctrl-select with any tool will fill the selected area.
•drag patterns have full preview
•copy / paste is beautiful and consistent!
•complete sequence grid undo/redo engine(ctrl-z & ctrl-y)
•faster screen performance
•several new options on how timings are displayed.

Thanks David,
I enjoyed what part of you classes on LSP I could make but I was not able to make all three and only part of two of them. You did an excellent job on them.

Hi David,
I would really like to see a video for those of us that are not using RGB everything, and still use LED or incan lighting mostly and how you can use the tools of LSP 2.0 to group controllers to a color and use the rgb tools. i know david posted a video last year for that, but i would like to see an updated one with the new tools and features.
Could you also maybe do an old vs new video to show old users what has changed and what does what now?
Thanks
Josh
-
I would also like to see this. Thank you in advance!

Of course LSP is targeted toward RGB and pixel based displays but it does work excellent with non-RGB displays also. I think the video you maybe refering to is this one: http://www.vimeo.com/11969010 which covers how to sequence using transitions without using RGB devices.
So you'd like a video that shows layers and the ways in which you can group controllers and elements inside layers?

Thanks for the feedback. There were lots of good questions and I think what was shown is that LSP isn't something that you can pickup in just three 50 minute sessions. There is a time investment to LSP but it's worth it in the end with what you can make LSP produce.

Something I really use a lot is the custom chase.
(1) Select the pattern you want to chase (do this in non-collapsed channel range)
(2) right-click + COPY or CTRL+C
(3) Go to where you want to do the chase.
(4) SHIFT + left-click + drag chase range [ down arrow or up arrow determines chase direction ]
If you do (4) on a collapsed controller, you will chase all channels in the collapsed controller, virtual controller or selected layer.
If you do (4) on a channel range, then it just chases the channels in the range selected.
The reason I point this out is that the default chase isn't very powerful, but this really is ... because you can
selected the chase pattern you wanted, then chase it very easily ... across channel range or an entire controller, virtual controller or layer.
Very powerful.

what i would like to have is a pattern library we could get sample and install to our display .... there are so many different one it would be good for us who has no clue what a nice patern look like ... and i am one of them ....

There are some in the transition library RGB, Mono, Live and User imports. Also if you go to downloads, in the miscellaneous section are Mike's user objects that he was kind enough to upload for all of us. Here is the link: http://www.lightshowpro.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=101 and there are directions there on how to use them as well. I would like more of them as well and if you put a feature request in I will be sure to rate it high and I'm sure there are others who will as well.
-
i have not find them ,,but maybe i am blind
thanks
-
I think they are gone. I'll ask Mike if he can share it again?
-
That is weird, my link takes me right to the download page for Mikes user objects. Transitions are right under where the controllers are on the left hand side when you open LSP. Just click on it. George
Dave, maybe we need a video of this? lol
-
It wouldn't work for me in Firefox, but I got it downloaded with IE. I attached Mikes Transitions in case anybody wanted them.
Brian

where do i put those thransition and how
thank

extract tfile to a folder, open LSP, create a seq and load a controller. Next Draw controller objects. You will see a Share button - click that. You should see an Import option. Simply browse to the folder where you saved your extracted file and select it. It should come back with a msg telling you that it imported 21 objects. Now you are good to go!

Here are a few more tips and tricks for LSP V2:
Using layers to group channels from individual controllers (LOR's tracks) - Part 1:

Using virtual controllers to group channels - Part 2:

What we need is a video that shows the transition library and what you can do with all the cut-n-paste options to modify them...I'll put that one up next.
-
<res. Great videos David ... thanks!!! <res.
The virtual controllers can set sort ordinals, whereas layers cannot.
Your also a little more limited (with layers) in how you can re-arrange the channels.
I didn't know you could add those custom virtual controllers to the library ... thats nice.
Now we just need a concept of a configuration which ties together the common LSP drawing, the controllers
and gives the ability to save the layers as well.

Using virtual controllers to group channels - Part 2:
http://www.screencast-o-matic.com/watch/cXjZhj3uf
Please note that you do not have to do each channel individually. You can select a range of channels with the select tool and add them to the virtual controller at one time. Hope that makes sense. You can view that process here http://vimeo.com/29730961
Also be aware that there is a configuration option to hide channels added to a vc(s) in the parent controller. Selecting this option will hide the channels in the parent controller as is demonstrated in the above mentioned video.
David also showed how to add your controllers to a library. If you type in your own "Group" name when you "add" or "add all" you will create a group that is unique to your environment. That way when you can then drag your entire group to your grid and it will add all of your defined controllers to the sequence. You can view that process here http://vimeo.com/29732436
There are also some great videos on the LSP web site on the home page and also in the TIPS and Tricks section. Perhaps DM could also post his videos there so they can be shared with LSP users who are not members of this forum.

Now we just need a concept of a configuration which ties together the common LSP drawing, the controllers

Create a sequence that has all of your controllers, drawings and layers in it then save it as a base sequence. When you create a new sequence just load the controllers from the base sequence and yu will get all of your controllers, drawings and layers.
Make sure you don't miss the addendum to DM's video in the post above.

Thanks Mike -- great tips!
Is there any proven way to import existing sequences and then get to the same place (with all your controllers and drawing) ?
My concern is that I might need to do some scrubbing of LOR sequences (in advance of importing into LSP) ... so that it all works out nicely when I import.

Currently no way to "Load Default controllers during an import however you might try this.
Create your base sequence with drawings.
Add all of your controllers to the library under your own group.
Import the LOR sequence.
Drag the controller you created in LSP on top of the controller created during the import.
Or add your entire group to the imported sequence and the copy the effects from the imported controllers to you created LSP controllers. I think this is the slower of the two.
It does need to be done one sequence and one controller at time but at least you wont have to redo all of your drawings.
Hope that helps some..
-
Thanks again ... I think the drag and drop method will probably work best for me. Since I'm just going to be importing LOR PC16 controller based sequences ... its just a matter of dropping the right ones in. Then all the new controllers (pixelnet) can be dragged in ... and then sequenced in LSP 2. I'll need to try it and see what issues arise. If I can minimize issues, I may re-arrange in LOR S2 first, then import.

OK I give up anyone have a link to LSP everytime I click on lightshowpro.com it comes up and then internet explorer has to close and can not connect to web page . I thought about checking out the pricing and the demo version is this still available. Running windows 7 64 home premium
-
Went right to it with Chrome.

Interesting, when I try to go there with my FireFox browser I get a big warning page instead:
"This web page at www.lightshowpro.com has been reported as an attack page and has been blocked based on your security preferences."

-
Looks like the site was perhaps partially hacked. If you respond to ignore the warnings you go to another site, but eventually the LSP site also shows up.
-
Ok I was able to get to the site, BUT when I click on demo it tried to install and then said it is not allowed for WIN , anybody have a Idea what I am doing wrong, It did say to go into control panel and either turn on or off window features what ever that is.

Hi Jeff,
Are you clicking on "Free Trial" at this page? http://www.lightshowpro.com/content.php
If so and are getting an error can you post a screen shot of the error?
Hope that helps

A few of us were having ussues of smartstring nodes not always lighting when they were supposed too while playing from the sequencer with the output enabled. Ever with all the vizualizers off. However they do play fine from the scheduler.

I am going back to hybrid mode for now. Pixel mode couldn't keep up with the rapid on/off of the opening of Jingle Bells. But Hybrid mode does.
-
Wow, thats really interesting. So when you program the SSC in hybrid mode (and 1 more RGB channel in LSP) ... the performance is better? Is that doing the same thing (pixel level sequencing), or because your using hybrid mode to turn on the entire string at once and its somehow faster?
-
the way i understand it, if non hybird mode and you want the entire string all the same color at the same time, you have to send out X number of commands for each node, in hybird mode, the ssc sees that channel and then converts and turns them all on at once in that color with a single command so less data is sent.
At least that i how i understand that mode.....
Myk
-
Yes anytime I need the whole string to come on all at once I only turn on the 1st node in the string and leave the other nodes off. I know my laptop is really powerfull. A lot more than my show computer. It may just be LSP just doesn't output fast enough at this time. The schedular does better but doing rapid on/off and to make sure all on commands are crisp, hybrid does best.
-
Thanks for sharing this. I programmed all my SSC to use hybrid now. I also decided to set up each SSC running hybrid mode as two controllers ... the first channel (3 rgb channels) as its own controller (string mode) and the rest of the channels as the other controller (pixel mode) ... and that way I can collapse controllers and avoid accidental use of the string mode when sequencing. I like how flexible LSP is in terms of setting up hardware. Has anyone tested under vixen to see if the string exhibits the same lag for similar pixel-level sequencing?
-
I went a wee bit further - used three controller for each. First one I called string which is the rgb, second one is what I call hybrid which has three separate channels, and lastly one for the nodes themselves. So for say the roof I would have the following: roof-s (rgb); roof-h (r,g,b); roof (start addr - end addr). Inside LSP I set up three layers 'Strings', 'Hybrids', 'Roof' this approach allows me to use the string when I want rgb and hybrid if I want to convert say last years seqs which had separate red,gn,blue channels. And lastly the full pixel strigns if I want to get really fancy with transitions.
-
While trying to cheat and re-use my 2009 120 channel sequences for my 2000+ channel 2011 display, I came up with a slightly different method to import the timing and effects without "distroying" the exisiting sequence.

I know I am new, but Im having issues with viewing the videos. My linux machine despite having the newest java version wont allow me to view them.
Im finding this DMX setup seems simple, yet confusing to how it all hook in.
Im looking at using the teensy light controllers. About 80 to 96 channels. But also using RGB LED light strips with light show pro as the sequencer.
My hope is I can trace the eaves, roof line, and windows with the RGB LED's. But how does all this work? It looks like I have to have two different sequencers, one for the DMX stuff, and another for the teensy light controllers.
Then each strand will need its own 12 volt power supply?
Isnt there a way to use the Ethernet cables, and just daisy chain all this into a string of controllers? So I have one cable leading out of the laptop, to the teensy light controllers, and then all the mess start from there?

You need to post this question in a different thread. I could answer a lot of these questions, but your questions have nothing to do with lightshow pro and I am reluctant to muck it up or as we say hijack a thread.

Even if the questions are not on topic... the links still do not work.

I can't seem to get any of the screencast videos of DMoore to load from the beginning of this thread.

You might want to look thru all the stuff that dmoore has on his website holidaycoro.com
On the left side are some links to useful articles. I do not know if the same video is there or not, but he has a lot of stuff posted on his website.
