Title: Smart Strings and Color Ribbons = OMG!!!!!!
Post by: tallan on December 03, 2011, 02:15:49 am
Hey All,

Well a day late on getting the smart string all tied in and still have a bit of programming on a few more songs but I ran one tonight and it was the new WOW factor.

I did 2 driveway arches as we have a semi circle driveway so one at each end and they are big 30' so the conversion Van can get in and out with out any problems.
Well I did 2 rgb flex strips per arch and they meet at the top and they turned out very nice, it looks like one whole strip and the cases just cruse on by without issue.

The light they throw out is amazing!!! We have a wooded lot across the street and it gets lit up so much by the arches. I need to rethink my programing now as they are so bright!  ;D
Still in awe as to the color and light they throw all I need now is a sensor to flash them blue when cars go speeding by LOL!

Anyway, Just wanted to Kudo's RJ for his for thought on the SSC's and the ability to chose which end is #1 light it really made the arches easy to put together and the controllers easy to get to. Thanks again!!!

Ted

I outlined the garage doors with flex strips to test and burn them in, but after 2 hours I turned them off because they were lighting the whole street! I feel bad for my neighbors now, that wasn't even 20% of the total lights I'm going to do.

Thank you rj!

Remember earlier in the year when everyone was posting that they need ones with more leds and such because they were worried the light output would not be enought?

Remember me saying this is nothing you need to worry about?

A mega tree of SS will light my moms whole yard up at 100%

I put flexible strip on my roofline, and we've decided to only use every 5th pixel when we light up the whole thing.

i've used the plastic rectangles under a table to give a lighted effect..  I had to set them to about 50%   hehe

I am very pleased with the output of the flex strips.  Actually cheaper I think than the C9 LED replacement bulbs I bought.  I would use these as house lights if I could leave them up all year round.  I bet you could since you can hardly see them during the day again my white trim.

Our Sign uses 16 strips, 8 Flex Strips cut in half.

I can read the sign from the reflection off the neighbors front windows.   ;D

If you watch the video look at the cars and how the arch just nails them with color!

I would like to know more about your arches. What type of PVC did you use? Did you attach the flex strips with zip ties? How are you anchoring the arches?

I've just finished getting pixelnet working on one feature and am ready to work with my file strips now. I really like what you've done with your arch.

Nice Job Mickpat! I hope to do something like that next year!

As for my arches they are a simple build. I used 3 pieces of 3/4 inch electrical pipe (The metal kind.) And they are setup with no guy wires and have withstood 50 + MPH winds already this year. Also used 2 couplings to tie them together. I had planed on a solo setup but they were so light that the misses was able to help. ;)

They are anchored with 3 -4 foot re-bar pounded down about a foot then a 4 foot piece of 1/2 Electrical Conduit (The metal pipe) over the re-bar and then the arches slide on over that.
They will wiggle a little but that's all they will do. the 4 foot 1/2 inch pipe really added the stability to them.

I just zipped tied the strips onto the bent metal and it took all of 15 minutes for the arch. Yeah bending the pipe took the longest and I used some of the Grey PVC pipe i had as a template laid out on the ground. I just staked it at 15' as that is how wide I wanted them. I started the bends past 4 foot as that is where they slide over so the 2 end peices are not as bent as the middle piece on the top.

Anyway they really turned out better then I had hoped and no guy wires is nice as well!

Hope that was useful to you and everyone planing on arches. I have not thought of mini's on them but they took a little effort to bend and I bet they would do just fine with them.

Impressive flex ribbon tree. But holy crap, those things are bright!!!

I was mulling having a ribbon tree in my front yard as an alternative to a mega tree, but I'm concerned about the entire neighbourhood flashing.

Tallan,
Are those Jedi light saber arches?   ;D  Great stuff!

I really need to stop looking at SS threads, I'm getting CLAP shakes for 2012 already and I just went live Monday...
