I am confused how it connects to the window frame.

It technically does not "connect" to the window frame. It is more of a tension rod principle. Simply tightening the bolts on each side should create a tension fit similar to a shower curtain rod.

Hope that helps

Rick,

Here is what I am building this year for securing the PVC frames to my windows. I have attached a sketch that I made up for reference (sorry for the crude drawing).
  • Drill 4 quarter inch holes near the corners of the PVC frame
  • Insert 1/4-20 bolts from the center of the window frame through the PVC
  • Insert 1/4-20 nut between PVC frame and window frame
  • Thread the bolt through the PCV, into the nut and finally contact the window frame
Tighten each bolt until they contact the window frame. I am going to use 1/4" vacuum caps to prevent the bolts from marking the siding.

Very Cool Idea <res.

I am in and will probably bring the wife and kid.
I suspect that I would come for a week as well. Take the family to the local attractions for a couple of days and blinky for the others.
I can also volunteer for set up and tear down if needed.
I will be the one with a fishing pole in one hand and soldering iron in the other ;D

Thanks RJ

I get the same look everytime that I buy cords... <fp.

I gues they are not used to someone buying 200 extension cords at a time

Oh Man, the ideas are flowing....

I can picture a coo coo clock going off at 5PM that nudges a lit candle under a piece of string that is holding a GIANT candy cane upright, that falls when the string burns through. As the candy cane falls it hits a switch that turns on a model train (O gauge of course). The train then travels down a length of track and falls onto a seesaw that bumps into a bowling ball sitting precariously on a track. The bowling ball then falls onto a pillow that causes the first of 3000 domino's to start a chain reaction ending with the last domino falling onto a balance scale. The scale slowly rises until it makes contact with a trip spring that opens the door of a hamster cage. Of course the hamster has to be dressed in an elf costume. The hamster then runs to a plate that is wrapped around the north pole like a collar. As the hamster enjoys it's favorite snack on the plate (use the snack enlue of a trained hamster.....Not enough time this year to properly train a hamster) the plate slowly slides down  the north pole like the ball in Time Square. Once the plate reached the bottom of the pole it makes the final contact to start the show. However, I might be inclined to have it ring a tiny bell and have only one light of the display come on. This might be anticlimatic after such an elaborate starting device, but will be funny as he..

Just a couple of ideas
Tim

The Porch / Off Topic - Computer Concern with Java
« on: March 31, 2011, 11:34:26 pm »
Hello all;

This is a bit off topic computer problem that is preventing me from checking out the Olive program.

Concern:
When I open a Java application and I move the cursor over the application, the screen shrinks and becomes distorted rendering the application almost useless. I belive this began to happen several months ago when my Java performed an automatic update. Here is the steps that I have taken trying to resolve the issue.

1.) Searched Java website FAQ's and support forums. No similar issues that I have found.
2.) Removed all Java applications that I have found in my directories, and performed a clean install of the latest version of Java.
3.) Checked for all updates for my Laptop and Operating sytems. All are up to date.
4.) Checked and updated all drivers

Operating system: Windows Vista 32 bit......HP Pavillion Laptop dv9700

After completing the steps above and adjusting the Java settings as per the Java help section,  I am out of ideas. I have attached two screen shots of the concern. The first is what it looks like if the mouse/cursor if not on the Olive screen (work area). The second screen shot is with the cursor over the work area. I would be interested to see if anyone else has experienced this or has any thoughts.

Thanks in advance!

The Porch / Re: Interested in learning to Design PCBs
« on: February 21, 2011, 08:07:53 pm »
I am glad you guys brought this up. While I am no where near ready to start designing PCB's, I would like to have a better understanding  of what it is that I am soldering.

Does anyone know of a source of good information on basic circuit design and theory? Basically a low level overview or electronics book for "Dummies"

Thanks for all of the info so far.
