The Porch / Re: How does the ethernet data stream work? (Solved)
« on: December 29, 2015, 07:46:06 pm »
Virtualbox interface on my PC was causing my issue. The interface had to be disabled. It was interfering with Xlights output.

Are these still available?

The FPP output works fine. It is the E131 output from XLights that has the issue.  Here are the setups.

I have only 3 ETD Multicast universes and one extra USB defined on both XL and in the FPP. I will set up all 32 universes in XL and try again.

Thanks you guys for the explanations.

The Porch / How does the ethernet data stream work?
« on: December 27, 2015, 05:07:44 pm »
I am curious about the output to E.131 devices from various sequencing programs. For one Xlights. I'm wondering if the E1.31 data stream just get interpreted by the E1.31 devices as a straight up data stream of absolute addresses and then the E1.31 device decides what sort of output it makes based on the firmware. For instance, the lynx Ethernet dongle flashed with pixelnet firmware somehow knows based on the number of packets it receives whether or not it is DMX or Pixelnet.

The reason I am curious is because I cannot get the latest version of Xlights to drive an Active Hub from the XL software. I can place the fseq file on a player (FPP) and the output works as expected. I figured I would ask on this forum since I use the Lynx Ethernet dongle flashed with pixelnet firmware and an DLA Active Hub. I'm guessing that there is some common way the E1.31 data stream is outputted from any given sequencing program to be received by an E1.31 device.

Maybe there is no simple answer to my curiosity without getting highly technical. Which I know is taboo on the forum.

Ardunio uno is good to use if you would like to build your own board eventually. The ATmega328P is a dip style cpu. I have built a RGB light controller that uses DMX and I used the uno board to program the cpu chips for my boards.  So, I prefer the uno due to the dip style cpu and ease of programming.  So, if you can program in basic, VB, or C then the ardunio programming language is easy to do. There are a lot of example pieces of code available out there to build on and there are many shields if your not into building your own or boards based on ATMega328P. One thing to know there are several versions of the Ardunio programming software and not all code works on each version. So that can be frustrating when trying example code. I suggest downloading Version 021 and 1.0.5 r2. I mostly use 021 which is older.  It is just that I've had better luck with it in what I am doing. There are modifications that need to be done in various versions of Ardunio/AVR code in some cases. If you plan on building your own board and buying the chips then you will also need to place the boot loader on new chips. Again for me it was easier to modify the AVR code in 021 to use boot loader code to burn the chips based on info I found on the web.

I'm sure that there may be easier methods now as it has been a couple years since I've tried any of the new Ardunio software. Many bugs have been addressed and fixed since 021.

yes, it should work as long as it is SAA1064. Good price!

It may be possible that you don't need it, but never tried without the chip inserted. It is just a driver for the 7 segment LED's as far as I know. I'll bet the pic just transmits HEX code to the driver IC for it to display the start channel. There is most likely a memory location in the pic where the start address is stored.  If that is known then the memory location could probably be set using PICKIT3 and then downloaded to the pic. The start channel will need to be entered in HEX, I believe. The checksum will change on the pic once that is done, so don't be alarmed by that. I know that this works on SSR4 pic chip.

Assuming that pin 17 is in fact the input pin intended to read data stream. Pin 1 to PIC pin should be zero ohms.

Sorry, I don't have an LE in front of me to verify.

If you have ohmed pin 1 to ground and it is a short then that is the problem.

ST486bn
pin 1 output to pic. Should be 4 to 5 meg to gnd.
Pin 2 Enable Vcc + (5vdc) I think.
Pin 5 is Gnd
Pin 6 A DMX In
Pin 7 B DMX In
Pin 8 Vcc + (5vdc)

Sounds like your problem is on the output side of the RS485 chip. Possibly shorted to ground. High impedance path to ground created by the lightning. That should be visible, I would think.  My other thought is that the RE enable pin on that chip may have a problem.  I think that would prevent the chip from outputting to the PIC. Not sure how RJ did this on the board.  He could better speak to that.

Maybe you can post a good pictures of the board front and back.  That has helped before identify issues. It has to be good enough so that we can zoom in and look at traces.

Ordered a couple of them as suggested eBay for the cheapest price. Two shipped from China about $12.50 arrived today.

Tested them and they work perfect in one of my assembled LE's.  I was a bit Leary because the numbers at the bottom of the chip are different.  Turns out that doesn't matter, just so they are Part# SAA1064.

Now hopefully, the next LE Coop offers parts less the board.

Thanks Again,

Greg

Word of Caution:

I downloaded this, but in order to do that you need a Google Play Account that is tied to a payment method.  I chose Paypal.  Looking at this carefully, I noticed that after Jan 26, 2015 my free Google Play cost $9.99 per month if not canceled.

Maybe I did something wrong on the free download, but I had to Cancel Google in my Paypal Acct.  which made the payment inactive.

Just beware about Free Stuff.  I did download the zip file ok which is awesome.  Lots to songs to blinky.

That is my problem. I have two boards to finish. Maybe the next LE Coop will offer parts less the board.  I'm almost afraid to wait if I can find IC now.  I know they are available in lots, but I don't need 500 or 1000.  The stock is getting short since they are discontinued.

Maybe someone has a couple they could sell me.
