called light show studio now with version 3.0 in beta from what I have seen, but I haven't done a show for a couple years.

And how does the work in cooler outdoor weather?  Does the liquid freeze and how oftwn do you need to fill it up?  I was thinking about fog as well but wasn't sure if it would work in December.

That's pretty much what I was thinking.  All signs point to it should work.  I guess another option is the lynx usb dongle with a conversion cable.  Not sure why I hadn't considered that.

When i get something ready to test I'll have the report back.

The Porch / DMX equipment question
« on: July 10, 2015, 10:31:40 am »
Hello all!  It's been a while since I have posted, but I had a couple ideas I wanted to see if anyone had tried yet.  I was thinking about putting a couple machine/movable heads, like an ADJ INNO Spot or Chauvet Intimidator Spot under my front porch roof.  Has anyone tried to run something like these off of the conductor with a smart hub generated DMX?  If memory serves, there is a slight difference in the refresh rate or frames per second between the pixelnet and DMX, and I'm not sure how the hardware would handle that.  I would have to make a conversion cable to 3pin DMX, but that isn't a big deal.  Or would I be better off getting an Enttech DMX USB dongle to handle that part of the show and revert to running from a computer?  I think LSP should handle them both together pretty well.

If I remeber correctly, the first coop had an issue with some of the surface mount chips being misaligned as well.  If you put a good flashlight behind the board you can check to make sure the legs are all on the pads.  Caution though, there are places that are supposed to be bridged so don't get an exacto out and try to "fix it".  Might search in the trouble shooting section as there were a couple of us that posted pretty detailed pictures of this. Edit: found it!   You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

Also the etd seems to be pretty particular about getting enough flow on your soldering joints so the usual reflowing might help too.

Lynx Slave / Re: Slave Firmware

Yes, I'm scheduled to go over the 16k channel count.  I was going to rechannel so that it is all on the same controller,  but couldn't all be on the same hub since it's over 4096 channels.

Last season, I had 16 strings all starting on the ground headed up, but I'm still debating whether to splice another 50 onto the end and go up and down like you are talking about, or just setup 16 more controllers.  I had a few strings die last year on my mega due to heavy icing that occured.  The rj45 pigtail connectors actually corroded down to nothing from the moisture!  So this year I am going to try to sheild them a little better from the elements.  But was leaning toward just having separate controllers due to ease of replacing and if one goes down its not such a huge dead spot in the tree.

Lynx Slave / Slave Firmware
« on: July 30, 2014, 07:29:05 pm »
Hey all,
Been a crazy year so far and low and behold it's almost August!  I was kicking some idea's around for this years show and have come to the conclusion that I want to add around 4500 channels.  This will take me way over the pixelnet channel limit for a single conductor.  I used the conductor last year, and man it was a really slick setup.  My network wasn't congested with streaming data, and I didn't have a computer tied up all month running shows.  So I swung by here and looked at the wiki and saw that the firmware wasn't posted yet which isn't a big deal right now of course.  I was wondering if RJ had any estimated completion date since I would rather not spend a ton of time and money on nodes, wiring, etc if it isn't going to work this year.  Unlike last year, I am hoping to get most of this years set up put together and tested before it has to go on display!  :D

A big part of the driver will be doubling my mega tree from 16 strands of 50 nodes to 32 strands of 50.  So that will have to be split across two separate 4096 channel uni's.   Might get interesting programming, but I think LSP should be able to handle it seamlessly.

Edit:  titled it for the conductor, meant slave doh!

Lynx EtherDongle / Re: Advantages of Etherdongle over USB-Dongle?
« on: November 20, 2013, 08:24:13 pm »
There was a direct comparison video with a massive matrix that someone made when the first EtD's were being cooped.  The EtD was much smoother.  Not sure if that was a limitation of the pic in the dongle or if it was something else causing it and has since been fixed.

To add to Steven's great points.  Personally I would go EtD and conductor since the setup is pretty easy to configure (at least to me) and once you get past the 4096 limitation of the usb dongle (which can happen pretty quickly with smart strings) you will have to have multiple usb dongles which is just extra wiring/equipment to configure and keep track of.  (which com port is which etc) One drawback of the EtD is that your computer network may be very laggy while a show is playing, but that can be easily overcome with either a secondary network (yes more equipment again), switching to a conductor/slave setup which doesn't send massive amounts of broadcast data across your router/switches, or just plugging the EtD directly into the computer (assuming it is supported by your computers network port or you may add a network card, I guess this should be checked also for your switch/router if you have one of those in line like the previous examples).  Curiously, my router will broadcast the data, but not allow control of the conductor.  It connects, but you can't play the shows or sync time for some reason.  So I have just been plugging in directly and using the wireless connection to move files etc on that machine.  Worked great so far...  I have one computer that would not work when directly connected (home built computer) and a dell that works flawlessly.

My neighbors have actually been mostly positive about the pixels.  I switched last year to 100 percent rgb and don't see myself ever going back.  The near limitless possibilities of the pixels is just amazing once you get used to working with the large channel counts.  (Thank you LSP!)   And most people (around here anyway) have never seen the pixels used in a Christmas display so they think I'm a freaking genius.  >:D  I did stay at a holiday inn once I guess.  I point them all this way actually!

Lynx EtherDongle / Re: EtherDongle programming

Well I tried to post this earlier but I guess my phone was hungry and ate it...  Get a good flashlight and shine it from the underneath side on the pic32 on the side nearest the 8.0 MHz chip and look for bridges on those legs.  If you can manage to take a few pictures of it please post.  It may need the solder reflowed on those legs.  Don't start picking at it with an exacto though if you see something as some of the legs are supposed to have a trace connecting them, but its been a long time since I put my originals together so I don't remember exactly where they are now without looking.
