I have not had a chance to replace the node before the bad one, but for some reason the whole string is now working.  I will take your advice and replace the node in front just to be sure.  Don't want to tear it down once I put it up for Christmas.

So pulled out my smart strings and one of them has a bad node.  I tried replacing it, being aware of which way the IC was facing and just twisted the wires together to test.  It was working but then after soldering and wrapping the connections, the node is not working any more.

Is there anything that I need to be aware of?  What I am missing?

Here is the process I followed.  I think it was shown in one of Sean's videos.  Convert the new .lms file to xseq.  Then go to the Nutcracker tab and open the new xseq file, which automatically opens the XML file with nutcracker effects.  Then save.  You can now export and the changes to the lms file are included.
