Other Projects / Re: SSR8 (no DMX) PCB

Yes I did plan on designing my own board this is not a copy of RJs board, it is based on the SSR4 circuit though. If RJ doesn't want me to make a new board based on his work I wont. I respect all that RJ does and I don't want to step on toes.

And again I am not running a coop I was just wondering if anyone else would be interested at this point. I was just trying to decided if I should design a one sided home etch board or a 2 sided manufactured board.

parts for one would cost $20.46 from mouser. This would go down if multiples are ordered.

The board will fit in a keptel CG1000 or CG1500 (~$20)

I am using the same parts as the ssr4 with the exception of using resistors instead of the SIP, the sip saves board space but is always back ordered

I could of course do just that, mount 2 ssr4s in 1 box.

But I also wanted to make a change to the ssr so that I would not have to hunt down that cursed SIP that mouser never has in stock when I want to make an ssr4 :P

either way I am going to make the boards I want, I just was wondering if anyone else wanted one.

Other Projects / SSR8 (no DMX) PCB

Would anybody be interested in a ssr8 pcb for use with the freestyle?

After this Christmas I realized that I wanted an 8 channel ssr for use with arches and bellagio fountain poles. So I am in the process of making one. I use freestyles so I am not adding a dmx option to the pcb, which also makes the circuit very simple. The SSR8 would take 2 cat 5 cables from the freestyle. Basic set up would be 2 cat 5s from the freestyle, one power in, 8 channels out in one box.

My question now is whether should home etch the pcbs I want or have them made. The only way I can afford to have them made is by doing a coop. If there is enough interest I will design the board for manufacturing. If there is not I will design it for home etching.

So, anyone interested?  I am expecting the pcbs to run around $5 each if I get 50 made and of course less for more pcbs.

This is not a coop yet!!! I am just trying to gauge interest to see which design route I should follow. I appreciate your input.

The Porch / Electronics / PIC Microcontroller books
« on: December 08, 2010, 10:44:46 am »
Hi All,
I was wondering if any of you could recommend a good beginners book on constructing circuits using PICs or other microcontrollers. All the books I could find have either been way over my head or way too simple i.e how to make a light light up in series or parallel. I'm looking for something in the middle. I understand the basics but i'm not ready for a electrical engineering degree.
If there is a kit that comes with the basic stuff used to do the exercises in the book that would be cool too.

Thanks for the help

Other Projects / Re: EL Wire? Has anybody used it?
« on: December 06, 2010, 02:36:11 pm »
Ive been doing lots of research on el wire. That harp is very cool Dilip. I found this article on a guy who made a midi controlled el wire setup

You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

He uses triacs to control the el wire, same as an SSR4.  The triacs in an ssr4 are capable of controlling the the 120v 1500Hz voltage used to power el wire. The optocouplers in the ssr4 should keep the rest of the circuit safe from the wacky voltage.  SO....

If there is any one else trying to use el wire you can do it two ways.  Option one you can use a DC controller like the MR16 attached to transformers that power the el wire, for each wire (channel) you control you will have to have a separate transformer.  Option 2  you can get one of the large ac frequency transformers, one of the one that powers 100-300 feet of el wire  and use ssr4s (with out the dmx option). Instead of plugging the ssr4 into the wall (mains) use the output of the ac transformer to send power to the ssr4.  Then the el wire attaches directly to the ssr4 channel outputs.

I have tested option 2 for short amounts of time ( a few minutes ) and it seemed to work fine but I don't have the el wire integrated in to my display yet so I don't know for sure if I will have any problems with it after running them for a few hours or days, hopefully the triacs can handle it with out heating up too much.

As far as I know neither option will let you dim the wires, the brightness of the wire is determined by the frequency of the voltage not the power. The guy who did the midi controller dimmed his wire by rapidly blinking the triacs on and off, im not sure this is possible with the current setup.

Lynx SSR4 / SSR4 Cases
« on: November 26, 2010, 11:47:45 am »
I tried to order the suggested case for ssr4s from yourbroadbandstore several weeks ago, I dont have them yet. I thought it was just slow shipping but they never charged my credit card either. I tried to call them with no answer. Now I am in desperate need of cases and I need them quick. Does anybody know where I can get cases quickly? I would be happy with anything that would fit the ssr4 it doesn't have to be the suggested case. I have 8 ssr4s that I cant put in the yard because I cant get cases for them.

Thanks for your help

Has any body used EL Wire before?

If so has anyone done the blinky flashy thing with it? How did you do it?

If you dont know what El wire is you can google it or take a look at thatscoolwire.com.

I saw a video of someone using an MR16 to control the El Wire, (You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

Lynx MR16 / 16 CH DC Controller / MR16 Version 1 BOM
« on: November 22, 2010, 01:07:04 pm »
I was making ssr4s - I ordered a stack of PCBs awhile ago and am finally forcing myself to populate them so I can use them this year, and in the stack found a MR16 version 1 board I forgot I had ordered. I am going to order the parts from mouser to build the mr16  but before I did I wanted to make sure the BOM listed on the wiki will work for the older board. Is it possible to make a listing on the wiki one for the old board and one for the new? From my reading the only thing the new board has different is an LED and a few resistors, is that correct?

If the wiki BOM is correct for the version 1 board, I have another question.
the 3Kohm 1/8 watt carbon resistors are out of stock ( 299-3K-RC ).  Is it ok that I sub a 3Kohm 1/8 watt metal resistor? ( 71-RN55D3001F ), Is this the correct resistor? The metal ones are twice the cost but it would cost more to order the correct carbon ones from digikey after shipping.

Thanks for the help.
