I can only echo what others have said. This site is where it all started for me, thanks to RJ who designed great boards and shared his knowledge with all of us. I enjoyed learning about light animations, I acquired new skills, and got passionate in this hobby that bring joy to so many people at Christmas time when they see lights dancing with music. All of this thanks to RJ.
My Lynx are running strong, and I have no plan to retire them anytime soon!
Enjoy your retirement RJ, and one more time, thank you!

Thank you for your input taybrynn. I was wondering about the history of the hobby and its evolution...
I started 7 or 8 years ago with the Lynx Express and still use them in my show today. I am very grateful for what RJ developed and shared with us. I still come to this site on a regular basis to see what is happening. Thank you RJ for all you have done for us.

Thanks a lot for the explanations. I'll use them to build my spare USB dongle, if I can find a PCB...
Cheers!

Sale/Trade / looking for a USB DMX dongle circuit board

Title says it all.

I have had mine for 7 years and it is still running perfectly, but I would like to have a spare one. Thanks!

Thank you for posting these instructions.
What are the reasons for this modification? part replacement for one that is no longer available, or something else?

I have a DMX V2 dongle that is a few years old (6-7 years), still working perfectly. I don't have a backup and I am thinking I should have one. Wondering if what you suggested is the way to go (would need to find a board). or maybe there are other alternatives?

Lynx Express / Re: $4 Lynx wireless??
« on: January 22, 2018, 09:21:45 pm »
that's good news!
I've got the board already, just need to get the missing parts. It will be a few weeks though before I get to it.
I have a few ESPixelSticks and they are very to use with Shelby's tool. Make the ESP-01 programming easy. Only issue I had was related to web browser I was using (firefox) and linux. Had no problem with windows 10 and explorer.
Good luck with your new board for the SSR4.

Yeah I think that is what it is supposed to do. I am waiting until this weekend to take the show down and play with it more. If it works it is an extremely cheap alternative to the EX/RX.

I found the easiest way to program it is to buy one of the ESPixelSticks for $20 off of Amazon.

have you tried it yet and does it work or are you using the ESPixelStick?

Just ordered 3 boards for a total of $1.50 and free shipping. Not sure how long it will take but not pressed by time now.
Thanks for making this board available to us.

Lynx Express / Re: LE Alternatives
« on: December 28, 2017, 11:17:18 am »
When I started in this hobby I thought the LEs where the best option for me. Glad I made that choice. What RJ has created is pretty solid. I am slowly moving to pixels and need less AC controllers but I have on occasion wondered if I should not get an extra kit or 2 while it might still be an option. I am not familiar with them but should the LE totally become unavailable, wouldn't the Renard be an alternative? Don't they offer them assembled or as a kit? Again, I am not familiar with them but I have seen the name popping up on occasions.

Great! Do you have any ESP-01 modules and the means to program them?

Here is a link to the manual for ESPixelStick. The hardware part will be irrelevant but the programming and usage information applies. You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

The link to the firmware is in the manual.

Finally, here is a link to the board on OSH Park

Let me know if you have any questions or need help. And also share your results!

EDIT:
Lastly, if you want to try it right away, I can send you a board that needs a small modification. That is what I am currently using. The first design I made used the ESP TXD pin to send DMX data. ESPixelStick uses GPIO2.

Great job. I might be interested to give it a try for the next season.
I keep my 4 LEs away from the elements; They are mounted on a board next to each other inside the house and are daisy chained together with cat 5. From there, I run cables to the lights outside. Keeping the same layout I assume only the first LE would have to become wireless and keep the daisy chain as it is. Is that correct?
I have never bought from OSH Park before. Can you only get 1 or 2 boards from them or do you have to buy in larger quantities? Don't really want to get into etching my own board (yet).

The Porch / videos with flood lights?
« on: March 05, 2017, 07:01:12 am »
I recall seeing on this site someone's videos of his show with the main elements of his display being flood lights (Lynx Aether?). The quality of work and effects were nicely done. I can't seem to locate the thread/link and I don't recall who it was from (pretty sure it was from one of the regulars)....
I am trying to incorporate flood lights this year and I would like to see again how this person (and others) have done it. Links anyone? Thanks.
