This forum was started by RJ back in 2008 or so. He left this forum a few years ago. since he is the sole developer of hardware, there have been no new hardware developments.

if you want to see the landscape of RGB controllers, here is a table that compares them.
You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

I have 10 of the falcon controllers. If you use xlights as your sequencer the controllers can be automatically configured to match what you set up in xlights.
I have 130,000 channels or 250 universes running at 40fos, no lag. We have tested to 1 million channels at 20fps. this should be enough for most users

you will find info on xlights at xlights.org,
on facebook we have 4000 members You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

I also run my show with a couple raspberry pi's running FPP. You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

RJ, the founder of this group and sole developer of hardware hasnt posted here in more than two years (July 2015). I think your best bet is to find people selling their old DLA equipment or move to alternatives,. I no longer have and dla hardware in my show. most of my hardware is now falcon controllers You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login, i also use the falcon pi player as my show player You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

I think the short answer is RJ left. DLA hardware is proprietary and only developed by RJ. When he left there has been no new features released in years.

I looked at posts by RJ

2013 - 507 posts
2014 - 173 posts
2015 - 31 posts
2016 - 1 post
2017 - zero

I spend most of my time on

From 2011 to 2013 DLA was the happening place.

Is maybe the renard lune of dmx to ac lights an option? I have never used them but dave pitts has. He said they worked fine. I think they come in 16,32,48 and 96 output flavors

i agree that the falcon boards could use a decent manual, dave is looking to get one made.
I also agree the dla boards work, they just are a little dated with no updates to them in 3 years.

Let me phrase it better, if someone has no hardware and they are starting should they go with DLA Pixelnet or with falcon, alphapix, pixlite?
I tell new people to go with the falcon hardware, it has way more capabilities. For people already using DLA hardware and it works, stay with what has been proven reliable over many years/.

This year i switched entirely to Falcon controllers. I still have 60 SSC's, 3 active hubs, 3 passive hubs.
DLA vs Falcon hardware? Price is about the same for megatree.
$200 for falcon f16 to drive 16 strings. DLA active hub around $100 then 16 SSC's $10 each.
The biggest reason i switched is i can configure all channels, rgb order from the web page. i do not need to get on roof and bring down an SSC. I did use daves replacement firmware the last few years so i could program channel from the ground, just be careful to unplug the other lights.

I also use the virtual string capability of having 1804 and 2811 lights all on same port.

RJ left a few years ago and doesnt appear to be developing anything new. I started with DLA in 2012, went hybrid DLA,falcon last two years, now solely falcon controllers.
Dave is actively developing and supporting.
DLA stuff works, if you use it and you are not growing (How do you do 80,000 channels with DLA hardware?)  stay with what works for you.
Some users now are over 200,000 channels using xlights and falcon.

I have a conductor, I never could get it to work reliably. I have been using the FPP to run my shows since 2013. I can run my show from my phone.

tbone321 you must like at least the FPP as I see you have made 1216 posts over on falconchristmas.com since feb 2016 and 99 posts here on DLA since Feb 2016.

I think the point is after RJ left this site has become a shadow of its former self. Since Jan 2015 RJ has made 33 posts, 1 of those were in 2016. He used to do 33 posts in a single day back in 2012, 2013.

Understand, I liked DLA products. They work, they do work as advertised. It is like LSP, great sequencer a few years ago, no new releases for the last few years.

If anyone is interested in SSC's mostly ver 2 with dave pitts firmware and a pile of other DLA stuff, pm me. I will sell it for half of purchase price.

Id go with ws2811...much more readily available and still works with DLA stuff as well as compatible with other controllers.  A tad cheaper too I think.  Just my thoughts....

i really like the square 18ga ws2811 lights. i ordered 8000 of them for the marching band props. The 7 propos (4'8' matrixes with 2" spacing) were driven by 12v 45AH batteries and each prop had a falcon player and raspberry pi 3.
one master, 6 slaves.

We had to push 8100 lights into all that plastic. Not a single led failure over the 3 month marching band.

Also had ray put male nd female 3 pin connectors on each end.

Vixen+ / Re: Is anyone still working on Vixen+
« on: July 11, 2016, 01:47:10 pm »
"I went into the layout area of the software and saw a selection of various models but did not see anything called AC lights or even single channel."

Every model we have (Megatree, arches, windows, single lines, stars, .etc.) can be made of rgb, dumb rgb or ac lights.

The model shape is what you build with, you then specify what kind of lights it will be made of.

Just by dropping all your models on your yard you can also have a whole house effect, do sweeps left/right, expanding circles. All of this works with ac lights also. Your entire front yard could be made of rgb lights, you could then go and just change the light types to ac lights. Yard looks the same (arches, eaves, .etc.) but now the models respond to a single channel. Further if someone made a sequence for Wizards in Winter , their house is all RGB your house is all ac. Their sequence will work on your house.

I do believe that Vixen3 has an easier user interface from what i have seen. Use it if it feels easier and intuitive.

My point was there are dozens of people doing large ac shows (300-500 ac channels). After they learned how xlights work they have become very productive. Any sequencer will require an investment in time to learn how it works. Developers undervalue that amount of time.

tbone; i dont think you understand how xligfhts works with ac lights. every rgb effect will work on ac lights. fire works fine on ac lights. You need to understand how xlights creates effects. we create 24 bit rgb effects with every effect. When you build an ac model you pick what color lights it has, say red. Now if you drop a bars effect that has red, white and blue the ac lights will react to the red component of the effect. If you drop a fire effect on ac lights, the red color will cause it to flicker.

Putting a video on an ac light will work, but will not be of much use. So although every xlights effect work, some dont make much sense (like text).

Here are the effects that work well on ac lights: on, off, colorwash, fire, strobe, twinkle, shimmer, spirals, bars, ramp up, ramp down, curtain, fan, marquee, pinwheel, single strand. so about half of our 40 effects work well.

Whole house effects work fine with ac lights. if you do a chase or bars fro left to right, models will turn on based on their location in your yard.

There are a number of people who have used LOR for 5 -10 years and only have ac lights. I have been told that they prefer sequencing ac lights in xlights. If you are having issues with ac lights I or others would be happy to help.

I have posted the agenda for this weekends xLights workshop.
Agenda is subject to change if we go over/under a subject. Since this is first time of having 16 subjects put together, I will try to stay as close to this as posted.
If it changes I will update the website as the day progresses so you can play to dial in for the sessions you care about.

The Porch / I am feeling Nostalgic about DLA
« on: April 07, 2016, 02:52:51 am »
When I started in this hobby it was December 2011. I Think i put in "DIY Christmas Lights" in google. It brought me to the DLA forum. I ran my show in 2012 with all DLA equipment. The equipment worked great. I started using equipment from the other forums in 2013 . Last year I was still about 50/50.

It has felt like there has been way less activity in the last year.

This forum software has a stats button that shows posts per month, new users per month and stuff like that.
I made a graph out of the stats. It does not feel the same as when I was posting in 2012.
I miss the old days.

Thanks to RJ for the many years of lights that I have been able to run. I am moving to newer technology stacks now but I will never forget the thrill of the first lights that turned on in 2012 using an Etherdongle and active hub and some SSC's.

The Porch / Re: List of songs to sequence
« on: February 05, 2016, 12:10:37 am »
that link was mine, i created it in 2012. I took it (and the database down last fall).
Try going to holidaysequences.com You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

That site sells sequences for LOR CCR megatrees. The important part is you can click on 100 songs and listen to them and pick music.

I like mary did you know by pentatonix, light of christmas by toby mac and Because its christmas

Thanks to the work of Dan and Gil, any sequence you purchase from this site can be opened in xLights without the need for either LOR software or Superstar software.
