I did something similar using 1 x 3 boards. (I was using C7s. C9s may require a 1 x 4)

I attached 4 strings(RGBW) to 8 foot sections and put plug-ends on each end. Cup hooks are used to hang them from the gutters and there are cup hooks on the back side to hold extension cord for additional channels of lights further down the gutterline.

The way the cables come out of the end does not work well for placing them end to end. The spacing between the nodes at the joint will be a little larger than the regular spacing, even with the cables removed...

I'd go for a flex strip mounted on something - PVC pipe, wood strip, aluminum channel, etc...
I wondered about the wires coming out the end and its affect on spacing.

Thanks for letting me hash this out and giving me your input/advice.

My preference is rigidity. If I were to use the flex strip, I would probably still tie it to something rigid(PVC).
