The Porch / Happy Thanksgiving to all
« on: November 24, 2016, 02:36:33 pm »
Seriously?  It's 2:30 EST and no one has wished anyone a Happy Thanksgiving?

I have never been first, so let me take advantage of it.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL

AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT

(I know, mixing holidays)

Hmm.  I have been a vixen user since 2007 and just now looked at xlights for the first time.  I don't have too many RGB nodes so I figured I didn't need it.  Looks like I might be wrong,  I didn't realize it had a full sequencer in it now.  Does xlights work well for creating sequences that only use normal Christmas light strings (non-rgb)?  Can I create the same kind of shows in xLights that I have been doing in vixen 2.1?

Also, xlights will import a vixen sequence, true?

Thanks in advance.

Amen.  I have been dark for over a week wrestling with issues.  First it was CAT 5, then it was power cables, then it was the HOA lawn service cutting my show, then it was controllers all in the wrong place.  None of these things has happened in 7 years.  This year - it all happens.  Keep pushing.  In the end it is worth it.

Good luck.  And remember, it is supposed to be fun.  That helps sometimes.

thanks for the info Tbone.  I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens.  I'll bump this thread again in about a month to see if any of you brave souls ran afoul of the windows gods or there was truth in advertising.

In the mean time, if anyone else tries or has tried, I would love to hear what happened.

The Porch / Windows 10 and Vixen

Has anybody made the leap yet to Windows 10 and tested Vixen(2.x and 3), Xlights, Nutcracker, or any of the other emerging sequencing software and had success?  I haven't tried yet, just trying to determine if its feasible.

Thanks

Sorry to hear of his passing and our loss.  I had no idea, my prayers to his family.

Let me give an example to see if I understand the limitations correctly.

If I have a palm tree currently set on Channel 3 on my 1st Lynx Express (overall system channel 3), and I physically change my extension cord routing and hardware to have it run to Channel 4 on my 2nd Lynx Express (overall system channel 20), is there no quick way to change the Vixen software (on Vixen 2.0) to move my channel order to reflect this hardware change?  i.e. move the palm tree from channel 3 to channel 20?

Given your more detailed explanation of what it is you want to do, then:
    1) I answered the correct question
    2) I believe I answered the question correctly

Unless someone corrects me because I am wrong (which is always likely), the only thing you can do is (assuming you are swapping channels 3 and 20):
1)  right click on channel 3
2) Copy the channel
3) paste it to an empty channel (one you are not using - say channel 100)
4) right click on Channel 20
5) Copy the channel
6) paste it into channel 3
7) Copy channel 100
8) Paste it into channel 20
9) Clear channel 100

I am not aware of remapping channels in Vixen to different output channels in the yard.  In fact, in one of the other Christmas light forums, a similar discussion just happened.  Someone thought it was possible (feature added) but they cannot figure it out.  I think he was thinking about Vixen+ or Vixen 3.

for Vixen 2.x,  I just use Test Channels - looks like two checkboxs with checkmarks next to it. Select all channels and set the output level.

Rick R.

Oh Yeah!!  I forgot about that one.  Thanks for reminding me.

Correct.  Music is not necessary to create a sequence.

I think you are misunderstanding the Channel order option.  That just changes how the channels are presented in the Vixen UI.  It does not remap channels in Vixen to different channels on controllers.  That is still going to be something you have to manage at the hardware level.  Vixen 3 added that functionality (as did Vixen+ I think).

Let me know if I misunderstood your problem.

Don't know about Vixen 3, but the capability doesn't directly exist in Vixen 2.X.

What I do however is make a very short sequence that has all lights turned on (or the lights I want turned on) and then hit the "Pause" button on Vixen.  This stops the timer on the sequence but it continues to send out the last signal until I hit the "stop" button (or the start button and then the stop button).

An alternative way would be to make the same small sequence mentioned above but then repeat the loop indefinitely until you are ready to turn it off.  That works too.

Lynx Smart String / Re: best way to extend wires between rgb's
« on: December 26, 2014, 11:52:38 pm »
base don what everyone has written and what I remember RJ saying...
...Yes, you should be okay with about 12 to 18 inches of wire between nodes with no need to run null nodes in between.
Let us know if you find a good domestic source for 22/3 wire (which is what I think is the wire between the nodes when you buy them).
