xlights / Re: LSP 2.8 light elf to xlights conversion question
« on: November 19, 2013, 09:51:41 am »
I did try the conversion to conductor route but what happens is it only converts my E1.31 controller channels.  I have one USB DMX pro universe that the conductor conversion ignores so I loose the ability to bring those channels along.  I use the DMX pro to control some dumb RGB pixel displays as well as two AC16 D-light controllers that I have converted to Open DMX.  So Light Elf works for me for now and I did try it with 2.8 sequences and it works fine.  Next season I'll try to go all 2.8 but it's too late for me this year as this week I'll be finishing sequencing and starting to put up my display hopefully next week.

Thanks all

xlights / LSP 2.8 light elf to xlights conversion question
« on: November 14, 2013, 12:46:21 pm »
Has anyone tried converting LSP 2.8 files to xlights using Light elf?  Just wondering, I'm like 90% done with my Christmas show where I've sequenced using LSP 2.5 converted to xlights using "light elf" to add nutcracker effects for my RGB channels and plan on using the scheduler in xlights which worked flawlessly for my Halloween show.  I found out I qualify for a free upgrade to 2.8 but I don't want to rework my whole show at this point to mess with the LSP scheduler and RGB effects.    I may play around with it if I have time but going back to LSP to run this years show ain't gonna happen.

I agree the back up seems to be the only answer.  I've had this and a lot of other weird things happen like the preview player all of a sudden won't play.  I've saved the file, closed LSP and the same thing so I have to go back to a backup file or two and it's OK.  The problem is if you've made recent changes they are all lost.  I've gotten into the habit of using the rule "save early, save often" so I don't loose too much progress if something happens, because every time you save it makes a backup .  You just need to remember to go into your sequence folder and clean up the old backups every now and then so things don't get too crowded.  I wonder if LSP2.8 is better as far as bugs are concerned.  I'm not planning on upgrading until after this years season.  Just wondering if anyone with 2.8 has seen much improvement.

Exactly what I think as well.  I heard a rumor that the LSP people are working on creating a visual programming add on that would allow sequencing of large pixel display elements like mega trees, etc which I believe LOR 3 already has.  The bad news is it won't happen this year.  On the other hand the Xlight/nutcracker team is working on a direct conversion from xlights to LSP but that probably won't happen to soon either so this year my friend we seem to be stuck with work arounds.   This being my 5th year sequencing I'm finding that nothing is the ultimate answer and nothing works exactly ideal so that seems to be what we do.  I feel fortunate though that there are folks out there a lot smarter than me that create these ideas like Xlights, Nutcracker and Light elf and share them for free so that we can get at least closer to that ideal state that we all wish was just out there.   8)

Thanks Caretaker,

I backed it up yesterday and downloaded a free program that monitors the health of your drives called Acronis Drive monitor (I highly recommend).  It's showing that I'm experiencing critical errors every day so it's just a matter of time.  I'm researching a replacement drive right now so hopefully it will arrive before the big crash.  I hate when that happens.  Fortunately I'm a geek and have two other computers to play with if my LT goes down, he, he.    It's just such a pain reloading everything as you know....

I've tried the same thing taking patterns xml files from xlights/nutcracker and importing them into LSP 2.5 and seem to get the same random color patterns you are seeing.  I've asked for help on other forums and gotten what seems to be a consensus is that folks are sequencing what they need in LSP converting to Xlight/Nutcracker to finish the sequence there with plans to use the scheduler in Xlights to run their shows.  It's basically the direction I'm going this year.

It's kind of funny Frank.  I tend to think it may be drive related.  Two days ago I got a windows warning that there were some files that windows couldn't open and suggested that I run a drive check.  The check found 3 files in bad sectors and repaired them.  Yesterday when I got on my laptop it was shut down and I know I didn't shut it down the night before so I started it and got a warning saying that it had shut down unexpectedly so something may be going on intermittently with my hard drive.  In any case I figured a full reload of python and light elf should solve a problem if something had gotten corrupted but I still get the errors.  I attached the log file but there isn't much there because it was basically new since I wiped out the old one when I reloaded light elf.  I use the laptop to sequence in LSP and convert to xlights.   I have a 64 bit quad core tower that I'll use to run my show this year so I loaded python and light elf up on it last night and it works so I'll just network the LSP files over and convert them from there.  In the mean time I think I need to invest in a new hard drive for my laptop before it all goes bust.  Didn't help that it took a little bit of a fall a couple of weeks ago which is where the problems probably started I bet.  I just wonder why a full reload wouldn't fix things, maybe there is something left in the registry mucking things up????

Thanks Frank for your attention and all your work with light elf, I really like it!

Nutcracker: RGB Effects Builder / Re: You can use rgb floods in xlights
« on: September 25, 2013, 03:43:07 pm »
I have 11 RGB floods that get spaced across the front of our house display for chases and wall washing etc.  This year I decided to experiment with xlight/nutcracker with these.  I set them up two single stings in xlights one of 5 lights and the other 6 lights just because of how the start numbers fall in my DMX set up.  Just using some random effects I found that I can get some fascinating effects from emulating strobes to color changing chases, all kinds of stuff through experimentation.  I've just been collecting effects and making notes of the different  settings to use in my various sequences.  Bottom line yes definitely rgb floods will do some great things while using xlights, I'm stoked up about it.    >.d9

Hey guys,

I have 4 rgb arches set up in nutcracker as an element.  What I've experienced so far is any effects created run across all four arches simultaneously.  I there away to create effects that run on selected arches for example a chase that starts  with arch 1 flows through arch 2 then 3 then 4?  or effects going left to right on arch 2 and 4 and right to left on arches 1 and 3.  Maybe the solution is to define each arch as an individual element and create effects separately but it would be a cool time saver if it could be done as one element.  Thoughts?

Light Elf Software utilities / Light Elf ver .10 Problem
« on: September 25, 2013, 02:18:39 pm »
I've converted several LSP 2.5 sequences one at a time using light elf.  Can't say it's gone totally smooth but it has gone reasonably well as I've run into mystery errors along the way sometimes fixed by going back into LSP and optimizing the sequence and resaving to having to reinstall light elf at one point when it wouldn't load.  But again a wonderful time saving tool to get LSP 2.5 sequences into Xlights.  Today I ran into an issue where I can't seem to get it to work as I get the following error in the command box:

C:\Users\Gene\Desktop\LightShow\Light Elf>c:\python27\python.exe "light elf app.
py"
Process Process-1:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "c:\python27\lib\multiprocessing\process.py", line 250, in _bootstrap
    sys.stdin = open(os.devnull)
IOError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: 'nul'

I've even tried to reconvert sequences that I've previously successfully converted and it does this for everything.  I've reinstalled Python and Light Elf and continue to get the same error.  To my knowledge nothing else has changed from yesterday when it worked to today when it doesn't.

Anyone else having issues or possible solutions?
