Interesting...maybe I'll group mine and see what I can figure out.

thanks for sharing the technique!

Believe it or not those are just regular led lights attached to a PVC circle.
You could accomplish the same thing using vixen 3 by grouping the elements into legs. The spins in Ho Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rhum are just chases across each of the 6 legs. In Don't Stop the Party where they spin on and off I took a snapshot of what it looks like in Vixen 3 and is the last pic attached below.

Hope it helps

Here is a copy of the thread I posted over at DIYC 2 years ago:

I had a couple people ask about my snowflake spinners.

I stole the idea from Scott (taybrynn), You can see some of his videos here: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login He has his spinners near the peaks of the roof of the two houses he does. I believe he wrapped the pvc with lights like an arch.

Mine are even simpler than his though, I just made a circle out of Non Metallic EMT conduit. My strings were 16.67' long and I figured I wanted snowflakes about 5' so if I folded them in 3 I would get 66".
I used 66" as the diameter and figured the circumference which is 207".
I then took 2 10' Non-Meatllic EMT conduit and cut them down to 104.5" each (added an inch for the connection). I bent them in a circle and dropped a screw in the bell to hold it.

I then just folded the strings and zip tied them to the conduit and then zip tied them at the intersection in the center.
I alternated colors and it came out pretty nice. Each Spinner has 3 blue 50 ct strings and 3 white 50 ct strings, making a 6 channel controlled spinner.

See the pics below.

Wonderful show!!! I have spinners like that on my roof but for the life of me I haven't been able to get them to do what you have done.

Any chance you can share some secrets? I made a horizontal matrix in nutcracker and tried the bars effect which kind of does it, but nothing like you have. My lights are 8 sections of Flex strips in groups of 15 lights (if that makes sense. 120 lights per spinner).

Ok. I'll double check cables.  Then get out the hair dryer if that doesn't work.

Lynx Aether / Aether II - automagically turned on
« on: December 11, 2014, 08:50:29 am »
I have two aethers daisy chained together where the DMX in is fed by an Active hub and then goes out to a LE. This morning after the first snowfall the aethers turned on. I unplug them and plug back in and they turn back on.

No sequence is playing at all. My guess is water on the line has made its way into signals path. Would that cause ghostly type issues like turning on?

If not any ideas why this might be happening?

If so it will be yet another water related issue for me and will maybe build a little 2' pedestal for these lights and get them off the ground.

Let me know your thoughts.

Cheers!
Ryan

Hls, vixen+, vixen 2.1, vixen3, HLS, xlights are all free. Vixen 3 has the nicest user interface and it has our nutcracker effects built into it. Be aware those effects were from our xlights version 3.0.14 from April 2013. Vixen 3 now can produce a fseq file so u can run vixen 3 data on a raspberry pi. So no sequencer has it all, try them and pick what u like. I use Matt browns xlights. HLS has the best generator making singing faces, has ability to import in xlights effects. I find the user interface harder to use.

One can only hope that really soon xlights/nutcracker will have the best singing faces generator  ;)

I haven't looked at Vixen in about a 9 months....glad to hear that fseq functionality is now there. Their channel setup was also a bit cumbersome before, hopefully they have fixed that up too.

HLS....once you get your head wrapped around the logic of the menu (i use that term loosely) the workflow starts to make sense and it really does a fantastic job with creating singing faces. Watching the tutorials a couple of times helps tremendously so I do recommend that for the HLS piece.

The Porch / Re: Ray Wu and DHL Shipping- Do you have Orders Pending?

From what I can see there is also big money on importing iPhones. you can make up to 10x the cost of importing an iPhone to people in China. that said, I'm waiting for Ray to ship me some items too....and he's been *VERY* slow recently....from the factory to communicating. I know it's just a crazy busy time for him and I'm super impatient ....but i'm starting to admit that my matrix just won't be ready for the big halloween show and I'm starting to look at alternatives.

 :(
