The Porch / Re: What happened to DLA???

I've managed to get all of my hardware working now with xLights and make a fairly simple RGB pixel show for this year.  Anyone in a similar situation feel free to reach out.

The Porch / How long will this website stay up?
« on: December 13, 2020, 10:24:49 am »
First off -- hats off and so much appreciation for what RJ and everyone else did here.  I have some idea of the time and effort involved and it is much appreciated.

Like (I'm sure) many others, I have a lot of DLA hardware, both built and unbuilt.  I also really appreciate the fact that the website (with its untold treasure trove of information) is still here.

But, I know that these things aren't free, and likely sooner or later this site will disappear.  Does anyone know when that will be?

I'm in the process of trying to archive as much as I can, but I don't think the forums will be archive-friendly.

Don't know if anyone will notice a post here, but like Jason I'm trying to resurrect some SSCs from 2013.  Some program OK, but usually only once.  I can't reprogram them after that.  I'm also trying to flash firmware on them, but finding that my memory is dim and the instructions I've found very basic.  The Pickit3 software is reporting errors... and write failed.  I'm going to try the firmware Joe posted here, which is apparently different from what I have.

Also -- wondering if the 24V strings you can buy from Amazon will work with the SSC:

Thanks guys, very helpful!  I've signed up on falconchristmas.com.  From what I've gathered, all of the sequencing software out there is compatible with the SSCs that RJ designed (PixelNet?).  I was using LightShow Pro, which has also disappeared.  The computer where I had it installed died, and I can't even find the LSP software for download anywhere.  So, I guess I'm going to have to start over with something else.

Light Show Pro / Re: LSP still around?
« on: November 07, 2020, 08:44:32 am »
The people or company making LightShow Pro is apparently gone.  Also, I can't find any trace of of anything called "light show studio".  Anyone care to post something helpful like a URL????  Otherwise I have to assume that TAdamsOK is confusing it with something else.  Or maybe it has already gone under also???

Does anyone have a copy of the LightShow Pro software or know where I can download it?  I still have a license, but the computer where I installed it died...

I was active here back in 2013-2014, looks like now this community has gone inactive for some reason.  Reading around I find no explanation or discussion of what happened???  I still have a bunch of stuff I built (Lynx Express, LED controllers, etc).  I was thinking about getting it all out this year and doing a new display.  I would appreciate advice on what to do now...  Looks like the COOPs/builds are long dead, has this moved elsewhere?  Sure seems a shame to let the work of RJ and so many others go by the wayside...

We normally "de-Christmas" during the New Year's break, but there are quite a few people in my neighborhood (San Jose, CA) who leave at least some of their holiday lights up year-round!  I suspect some of them are just lazy, but we do have quite a few families from India, and decorating with lights seems to come quite naturally for them.  They have "Diwali" (festival of lights) every fall, but here they leave the lights up for months and some never take them down.  I love it!

Very impressive Paul.  What sequencer did you use?  The effects were really great.  I tried to figure out how to use Nutcracker this year, but since I chose LSP as my main sequencer, I was put off by the difficulty of integrating the two.

Nicely done!  What type of lights and software did you use?

As suspected, I had no problems when I used the camcorder's crappy audio :-)

One thing that did just occur to me.  For Halloween, I just used the audio from the camcorder recording, which of course had some background noise, etc.  This time I superimposed the original song over the video in my movie editor, so the sound was clean and unaltered.

I'll bet if I post it the 'low quality' way I won't have the same issue.  I'll try it and report back.

The Porch / Copyright violations?
« on: December 16, 2013, 07:17:53 am »
Upon posting my video to YouTube and Facebook (or at least attempting to) I notice that my video got flagged for "restricted content" or something like that on YouTube, and the video won't play on iPhones.  When I tried to upload to Facebook, I got a notice saying my video was a copyright violation and the video did not upload *at all*.

I didn't have this problem at Halloween, but the music I used was not as easily identifiable.

BTW, I did legitimately *purchase* all of the music I have used in sequences so far, from iTunes and then converted to MP3 format using Audacity.  The song I used for Christmas (Linus & Lucy from Charlie Brown Christmas) is probably one of the easier ones to recognize, but other than that I don't know why this is happening.

Has anyone else had issues like this?  Obviously they are making the software smarter these days!  If this is taken to its logical conclusion, we will either have to pay royalties or simply not be able to use copyrighted music in our uploads.  I do know from past experience that what we are doing is legally considered a "public performance".  Pretty stupid considering we're not making a dime, though I guess some people do monetize their videos if they have something that can get high hit counts.

Yes, forgot to say, Light Show Pro v2.5.  I'm happy with it overall.  Still on the learning curve though.  There seem to be some annoying bugs, but hard to be entirely sure some of it isn't user error since I'm still learning.  Timing marks are the main thing that drives me crazy.  They have implemented quite a few features to make them a easier to deal with, but they are still the biggest pain point IMO.

HUGE THANK YOU to everyone here for all the help.  I of course have plans for something bigger and better next year.  I didn't really have time to do everything I wanted to do this year, but I'm still pretty happy with the result.

Major learnings follow.  I know some of these seem obvious, but it's amazing how many 'obvious' things one overlooks in the heat of the moment :-)
  • A single SS Hub will only get you 4096 channels! (one pixelnet universe)
  • Cat5 (RJ45) connectors need protection from water (they get easily waterlogged and corrode quickly)
  • Setup will always take 2x longer than you think
  • I could go on, but you get the idea :-)

I feel your pain!  I didn't start the outdoor setup process until Thanksgiving break (I have a modest display since this is my first year) and found quickly that I wouldn't have time to do everything I wanted to do.  I started reading, learning and ordering stuff last year at this time, but time gets away from you and I also have a very demanding job.  I still managed to put up a nice little display and it will be bigger and better next year.
