I run an ESP8266 module from the 3.3v rail. It averages 80mA but has tiny peaks of 400mA (less than a microsecond).

In practice, it runs fine. If I remove and replace the module while the LE is running, the LE will sometimes reboot. That makes me think that I could be on the edge of the power supply's ability to keep up with the demand (at 3.3v). Adding a decent size cap would probably prevent that.

You might want to look at my post about it. I designed a tiny PCB with no components needed (just header pins). Its simple and extremely inexpensive, and has a large install base in a slightly different application.

Whoops. I didn't mean to abandon this! December was consumed by an enormous wildfire here.

If anyone has any questions I will try to answer them. Using a pixelstick to program is a good idea.

Great! Do you have any ESP-01 modules and the means to program them?

Here is a link to the manual for ESPixelStick. The hardware part will be irrelevant but the programming and usage information applies. You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

The link to the firmware is in the manual.

Finally, here is a link to the board on OSH Park

Let me know if you have any questions or need help. And also share your results!

EDIT:
Lastly, if you want to try it right away, I can send you a board that needs a small modification. That is what I am currently using. The first design I made used the ESP TXD pin to send DMX data. ESPixelStick uses GPIO2.

Lynx Express / $4 Lynx wireless??
« on: October 17, 2017, 01:36:29 am »
I made some adapter boards for the ESP-01 WiFi module that can be had for about $2-$3. They work with the ESPixelStick firmware, which is in active development.

Anyone interested in the design? You can have them made on OshPark for next to nothing. Well, 50 cents each to be precise, in multiples of three.

Other than the ESP-01, and the small PCB, all that is needed is a 2x4 female header socket and a 1x4 male header.

Lynx Freestyle / Substitute for M74HCT273?
« on: December 17, 2012, 10:59:49 pm »
I think I'm going to build out my freestyle PCB for next year.

The M74HCT273 is unavailable/obsolete. Can I use CD74HCT273 instead? Digikey lists it as a possible alternative. I looked at the data sheets and they have the same pinout. Just wondering if anyone can verify this for me.

Thanks,
Chris

I definitely don't think less heat will help you.

The less time you apply heat to the board the better off you are going to be. A heat sink will dissipate a lot of heat. That's what it is designed to do. You will do more damage with an underpowered iron taking forever to heat up the joints. I know from experience :) .

I'm not sure I like the idea of individual channel fuses myself. I think if you are concerned about shorts to ground in the rain your GFCI will take care of that WAY before you overload the board.

The Porch / Re: When do you take them down

I took mine down yesterday as well. It was bittersweet for me. I felt good about getting it all put away and organized. And that I will be able to cut the grass this weekend. But I was disappointed that it was over.

Of course it didn't help when I drove around the corner and saw my neighbor's blinking away happily. :)
