The Porch / To light or not to light b4 thanksgiving and 2014 Videos
« on: October 26, 2014, 02:06:11 pm »
Hi All,

So I am wondering if anyone turns on the lights a bit before thanksgiving? A Lot of work for  5 weeks of a show. Thoughts Please?

Also a couple of new videos are up for 2014. Anything that has 2014 in the title is this year. I also increased the channel count from 16 channels last year to 1600 this year. The grid that I am building (kinda like lawn lights- Cept I call them Kaleidalights) did not make it into this years show. However, Next year we have all the items already purchased to add to next year... 2 6' tall twinkling castles and 2 Eiffel Towers. You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

Too many projects for this hobby, but still love it. :)

Skunk: Pain in the A** Peppe' Le Pew thing that is in Love with my Cat! :)

I did find a remedy that takes skunk out very quickly... Faster than Tomato Juice...
LYSOL (Aerosol Cans) I have had our doberman get hit with it in the face... Covered Eyes, Nose, Ears, Sprayed gently, then wiped him off with a towel.
He smelled a very much less skunkish and after a bath, smelled more like the lysol.

Just for future knowledge. :D

The Porch / Ray Wu and DHL Shipping- Do you have Orders Pending?
« on: September 17, 2014, 10:53:22 pm »
Hello all ,

I placed an order with Ray a month ago and it when I got the tracking #, the item was to arrive the next day! 4 days shipping was great.

I place a second order a week ago and Ray shipped it out... However, There is a stricter inspection going on through customs which is delaying Shipment. See Rays Email below:

my dhl forwarder said there is a sudden very strict inspection in the board between HK and shenzhen (China mainland),and my DHL forwarder use HK DHL, once the inspection has been approved, the dhl website will update the tracking number information.
i have explained this matter to many customers these 3 days, this is a Emergency situations for us.

Thx..

If you are interested in the true 3pin DMX Controller, DMXKing (You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login) carries them and they ARE RDM. They are a little pricey (99.00) but well worth it as the DMX processing is done on the Dongle not on the pc where some dongles make the PC handle the traffic. I use them as I use stage equipment also in my display.

Zwiller,

Which Strips are you purchasing? I have been looking at these:  You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

they run ws2811, now my question is which controller. I saw one of the LOR guys do Icicles with the smart ribbons and they are cool!

Also, Check with the Manufacturer of the fog machine... some will tell you that using other makers fluid could void the warranty.

Here is the completed Waterproof Fixture. :) The Cables fit snug inside when disconnected. This does use a standard 3 pin DMX. :)

I used 3 of these along the front of the house, these were all the same DMX channel (1-6) to control colors. This year, I will be bringing in 2 more for the deck, 1 for the tall side of the house and 3 for the back... with DMX RGB floods also. :)

I can post a pic of the completed Outdoor fixture that has been constructed if anyone is curious.

Thank you Pk and MMS, I'll look into the train options, we get snow here, so any electric track could be a challenge... Unless I can find some inexpensive Clear PVC pipe... LOL
I did read the review on the 135.00 Polar Express model. It only has 2 cars and they do not sell other cars for it. :(  but if I go down a scale which is electric track, then they have cars, but they Ain't cheap! :)

First congratulations on your show and getting it on video this year. I really don't like criticizing someones display unless I have seen it in person but I will make a couple points. Viewing the video for Wizards, it seemed like you could have used a few more elements on in the beginning of the song it looked a little dark and I know you said you are adding more stuff for next year so I am sure next's year version will look different.

Thank you for the pat on the back for the first year, it's quite a process learning the hardware the software, and then playing with the video software (wow is that stuff non-intuitive).  In general I like to build adding elements throughout the sequences, thinking that it keeps the viewer wondering what's next and not is that it?  Don't know if it translates that way.  I did pretty much keep those two middle arches dark on TSO.

My second issue might have been what I set the camera on, I pulled the exposure down 2 fstops if I recall, and it does cut back on the lightness of the show substantiall, but at the same time it still blows out on whites and other bright colors so you cannot tell the top of the arches are green/red like a candy cane stripe.

Anyone know how the go-pro's handle the high dynamic range?

Again thank you, and lets keep the critiques coming please.  I never learned as much about one of my hobbies as when I sent two of my best "people" photos of a lady that modeled for me to a New York Fashion photographer.  His critique of the two photos increased my ability to SEE the image I was after in a way I cannot even fathom when I liked the stamps and sent them off.

Alan

I looked at the go-Pro line of camera and found out that they didn't have enough low light capability compared to one of the more expensive (under 1000.00) prosumer cameras (canon)

Thank you for the input. To be honest here, I sequenced what did the fox say, christmas Sarajevo, and Silver Bells. Sandstorm came presequenced.

The Stars on the side of the house are the following fixture:

I did have to go to the container store and purchase containers, boards to mount inside and cut holes to make the fixture waterproof for the elements. they have been really a nice addition for minimum expense. I am looking into some of the other stage equipment also and will be building a lot this year.  Has anyone ever done a G scaled train running through the yard with Battery operated LED lights on it? Thoughts here... and I have a lot of ground available. I did find a battery operated Polar Express trainset (135.00)

This year I do hope to do 2 megatrees and also do something with the tall side of my house..
