Pittsburgh PA Light-up group

Saturday, January 23, 2016
Setup at 7:30am so arrive when you like
End time: when you want to leave, or we are kicked out :)

Location:

Kings Family Restaurant in Harmar PA.
Address is:
5 Alpha Dr E
Pittsburgh, PA 15238

It is located just off the exit ramp from the PA Turnpike (AKA I76)

Everyone near and far is welcome to attend. The room can handle 40 more. I expect to meet for breakfast, say around 8:30am...This is meant as a meet-up and not a MINI. There is no intended material that will be covered. Plenty of experience will be here from static displays, LOR LED/incan setups, to full RGB display operators. Talk about your awesome 2015 display!  Bring some videos, photos, new props, your laptop, and all your talent.

The cost of entry is... Purchase a breakfast, lunch, or dinner with a drink, and tip the server well. We can't get the cost any lower!  In September we had an awesome turn-out.  Hope to meet some more folks this coming meetup.  This is weather permitting and I understand if we have 4 inches of snow on the ground.  Room is booked and they are again ready for us

We do have a HiDef 65" flat screen in the room for large group instruction if needed. There is also FREE WiFi. I recommend the Super 8 motel which is across from the Restaurant. There is also a Day's Inn motel right next door. From Harmar, Pa, there are 2 major shopping locations within less than 10 miles... Fox Chapel, and Pittsburgh Mills (with the mall).

I will bring some props, pixel controllers, an LOR controller, and a few other things.

If you have any questions, you know what to do! Any ideas on how we can make this a better event, please share!

Thanks
Clyde L.

The Porch / Possible Pittsburgh Mini and another meet-up!
« on: September 26, 2015, 11:04:17 pm »
A huge thanks to everyone for coming out to the first Pittsburgh, PA meet-up group.  We had around 20 people represent all parts of eastern PA, NJ, OH, and a bunch of western PA locals.  Folks from both the Facebook groups and the DIY Christmas, Planet Christmas, and Light O Rama forums were here to talk shop and share ideas too!  So much experience between the group, the conversations started when we walked in, and lasted till I left to go home at 8:30 pm!  The day was a huge success for the Pittsburgh area.  Awesome!

We are looking to schedule another meet-up at the end of January, around the 23rd or 30th.  This meet-up is dependent on the weather of course.  It will be held at the same location, Kings Restaurant in Harmar, PA.    If you’re interested in this group meet-up please let us know!

Also, some more news!  After today’s meet-up, we believe there is more than enough interest to plan out the first Pittsburgh PA MINI. I expect it to take place at the very beginning of April.  The current meet-up has a large enough room to hold around 40 or more people.  The question I have is what would you be interested in learning? What classes do you want to take?  What do you want to see more of?  Also there is a matter of instruction.  If you are talented in a specific area in the lighting hobby, would you be interested in sharing your skill as a class?

It is possible that the MINI could be a two-day event, a Friday and Saturday.  Again, this will revolve around the interest level and your ability to attend.  Again, share your interest in this event!  The more, the merrier!

I've posted this in a bunch of Facebook a groups.  I don't hover in the forums much during the off-season, but I'd like to send an invitation out to everyone who is interested in getting together for a meet-up.

Thanks for the reply.

No, SSC,s (Smart String Controllers) use pixelnet to communicate. You need a pixelnet hub to power the SSC and either a USB dongle (flashed pixelnet) or a etherdongle to communicate with the SSC.

I am trying to understand more about these Smart String controllers.  Can these read and decode native DMX if connected to a DMX source such as the DIY LED Express bridge?

Thank you!

xlights / Re: Not exporting all models to LOR
« on: December 16, 2013, 10:28:31 pm »
Ok, I'm happy to report that it was a combination of things.  First I probably was not saving prior to exporting.  Second I just went and assigned unique channel numbers to each display element.  I did have the models listed as "part of display" but they all had the same "start" pixel number :/ Life is good now thank you for the help :)

xlights / Not exporting all models to LOR

I have a sequence in Xlights that has 10 models.  It is only exporting 2 of these models and not the whole  set.

How do I get it to ouput ALL of the models?

I do have 21 universes setup for multicast in Xlights.

Thanks.

Lynx Zeus / Re: Zeus Intro
« on: May 18, 2013, 05:54:22 am »
My bad fellas!  I meant to say if Zues can be controlled by Light O Rama (showtime) or Nutcracker software.   If so, does it communicate thru E1.31.  The posts in this thread do not address that.  But as you can tell I am new.    I will take your suggestions and begin learning about the Smart String system.  I do not have an Etherdongle but I do have the E1.31 Bridge (found on DIY LED express dot com).

Off to Drill!  Long day ahead and I'll be busy till 1800 or so!

I'm interested to hear what is currently happening with the Zeus project.  I'm a 5 year LOR user and disappointed in their cost to add RGB to my show.  I was referred by a fellow decorator and am curious if this could an alternative to the Showtime / Nutcracker software?  If so, when is it expected to be released (for those of us who can not go to the Academy).
