Ok thanks. If that falls through let me know we might want them.

Thanks,
Richard

Were these modded for single power input? Can't tell from the pictures other than the missing second power cord.

Thanks,
Richard

Also since we moved to using a few pixels this year every house now has a Raspberry Pi and a Falcon Pi Cap so we have completely eliminated our Lynx Dongle and our Lynx TX/RX this year. Keeping them as back up just in case. Now we just use the DMX out on the Falcon Pi Cap.

Yeah I had the same question in march of last year. (You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login) Pretty much the only option is the LOR CTB16PC which people say you should pick up during the Secret Sale in the spring. Supposedly not much more then the LEs.

Personally I prefer the Lynx hardware we are running 25 of them in this year's show. Some of them have been running with little to no problems for 10 years this season. I try to pick up a few every now and then but it does seem that there were far fewer this year than in years past. And while we put out almost 6000 pixels this year A/C lights will always have a place in our show since we run 11 houses currently and possibly expanding to 15 next year. So the cheapness of running an A/C controller over pixels just makes sense.

I have also thought about trying to design my own but not being an electrical engineer it is a daunting task to think about. I'll stick to programming for now.

Lynx Express / Re: $4 Lynx wireless??

The ESP01's work great using the ESPixelStick firmware and setting them to DMX, then use the board that cmorda posted for the express. I never did get my board modification working for an SSR4 to accept the wireless. In theory it is possible the same way I just ran out of time to get it working between a new job and getting stuff working for this year's show.

Only downside to that is I am still designing the SSR boards. Real job has gotten in the way of doing any Christmas stuff of late. Would probably be easier to just buy them off of you, and then I will post the SSR4 designs like cmorda did for the lynx ones.

Ideally I would need 2 of the old transformers and 24 of the new boards to complete the project we want to do. I know some people would say I am crazy for using the older SSR4s instead of newer leds but this is only controlling a bunch of three color incandescent mini trees and so are a perfect solution.

It works great just wiring everything up via the breadboard. I just haven't had time to transfer everything to PCB and get a test ordered. Should be great once it is done, just replace the chip with the new pcb and a esp01 and wireless. Haven't done PCB design in two decades so should be interesting. Then I just need to scrounge up enough SSR4s to accomplish the cup-de-sacs design goal.

If it means we can resurrect the LE coops I am all for it. Even as a just in case something bad happens I would be in for several.

See I stick to the Lynx hardware because it just works. I need to do very little to get stuff up and running every year. And when we are talking 11 houses the Lynx stuff just works every time. So I will stick to it for a while longer. This coming year we are planning on adding a significant number of mini trees. So the SSR4s even though hard to come by seem to be an ideal solution. I'll probably just buy in bulk a lot of the stuff I normally use on a regular bases (i.e. resistors and capacitors) to reduce the per unit cost some.

I do have a couple of Falcons that I recently inherited that I am going to try and work into the show. We are just slow at converting to pixels. Single color lights are cheap and it is what people have on hand. As things get harder to find we will probably start adding more pixels each year. Heck I think we had 150,000+ lights this year. I don't think anyone really counted though.

Thanks for the advice though as to switching.

Yeah that is sort of what I was afraid of. Not to mention pricing it all out came in at about 1/4 the total cost. Which while on paper looked really good, but like you said justifying my time tracking down broken parts. It just isn't worth it. It was just so much cheaper. I mean I think I was at $300 instead of right around $1000. But that is also why I didn't pull the trigger and figured I would see what other peoples experiences were.

I mean if I can learn from someone else's mistake I might as well.  ;D

Thanks for the input.

Has anyone ever used one of the China Part suppliers to get parts cheaper than Mouser or Digikey. I am thinking of using You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to get a lot of my parts for build a number of SSR4s this year. There prices are about 1/3 to 1/2 of what mouser shows for the BOM. Now that are not able to get me everything but even what they are able to get me should save me quite a bit.

Just curious if anyone had experience with them or another part supplier.

Thanks,
Richard

Seem to be working great. Need to play with it more, and am designing a separate board so I can plug one right on to an SSR4 instead of doing the weird wiring from an EX/RX that you have to do now.

I'll post that once I get my oshpark protoboard that I designed for the SSR4.

I am only using the ESPixelStick to program the ESP-01. It's just a little easier since it has the buttons and everything already in place. way easier than trying to lay everything out on a breadboard.

Yeah I think that is what it is supposed to do. I am waiting until this weekend to take the show down and play with it more. If it works it is an extremely cheap alternative to the EX/RX.

I found the easiest way to program it is to buy one of the ESPixelSticks for $20 off of Amazon.

Ok that is what I figured, and had a set on order from mouser just wanted to make sure before I started soldering on pieces.
