I've been designing a system that does security as well as other things in the house. I started off with Parallax in mind when I first started sketching ideas, but later switched over to PIC.
automated SMS via Linux would be easy with a hardware interrupt for the computer.
IP cams are they way to go. especially if you get pan/tilt.
