Damaged Silk Screen! Solved
« on: February 19, 2013, 08:51:50 pm »
I need some help repairing a PCM. If you notice the silk screen is damaged on the top of the board. Can I just run a small wire from one point to another for the repair or is there a better way to go about this? The place where the damage is was burnt at the base of the capacitor and resistor. Also is there a way to check the capacitor easily?

As long as the copper trace is ok, the silkscreen doesn't matter.
From what I could see, it didn't look like anything that you need to worry about.

After replacing the components, follow the trace to the next component in each direction and check continuity.

You can use an ohmmeter to see if the cap is shorted but beyond that it would be best just to replace any potential bad parts. Just be sure when ordering that you get the pin spacing correct.

Well that is actually what I thought except on the bottom of the PCB 3 of the points do not go anywhere and the only trace that I can see on the top is the silk screen.

R1 connection traces are on the top of the board, C14 has one connection on the top and one on the bottom. You need to replace R1 with the correct resistor and C14 with the correct capacitor.

I just use my volt meter to follow the contact points to make sure that no trace was burnt and replaced the capacitor. The resistor was ok. That's it.

A lot of boards now days are multi-layer. The most common setup being 4 layers with the two internal layers being mostly power on one and ground on the other. Unless you tear the via out, these are usually pretty hard to damage...
