Question about the options in the Combined Effects area

Hi Folks,

Just getting around to trying xLights/Nutcracker ver 3.2.0 on my mac.

What does the following mean? Is it some kind of truth table? (and, or, nor, xor, etc)
1 is mask
2 is mask
1 is unmask
2 is unmask
Layered
Average

Been playing with them but I just want to understand the options better besides watching the pretty lights and going ooh and ahh 

btw: This is the first time I am controlling the lights with my mac book pro and its cool. So thanks to whoever made that possible. Normally I use my windows computer.
