helix will it work with Lynx
« on: March 10, 2011, 07:15:38 pm »
hey DLAers I am talkin to Greg about his helix and if it will work with Lynx ( He is a new member here and is very nice and helpful thanks greg) anyhoo as yall know I am not at all techie or do I understand all this stuff so could the pro's take a look at the helix for me and see if it will work. I know RJ is workin on the conductor but he is waiting because of the crazy channel count explosion and does not want to create somthing that will go obsolete so untill RJ comes out with the conductor I was lookin at the helix . I don't plan on going much higher in channels anytime soon.

the lynx equipment controllers, such as the ssr4(dmx), FS, Express, and MR16 should respond to any DMX commands sent from just about any device that sends DMX data. only thing to watch for is if the helix uses a special connector that doesnt line up with the lynx. (in that case an adapter can easily be made)

the pixelnet wount be able to be controlled by the helix

the dongle wont work with the helix (unless the helix can RECEIVE dmx data)

I saw the unit last year at the Okc mini.  I was a very newbie.  I had not built any controllers at that time (they were on order) but I had built my first dongle.  The thing I remember most was it was all in one unit.  No PC was attached to run it.  The whole show was on a micro sd card.  The unit even had RDS built in.  Like I said I did not know much at the time and that was my first mini.  I hope to be able to soak up more information next month at the 2011 mini.

The Helix won't need to be able to receive DMX data in order to control a PixelNet.  The Helix won't use the dongle at all.  It would actually replace the PC and dongle.  I think I'm actually close to working out the details of how to control a PixelNet with the Helix.  The only thing I still need to work out is the buffer details.  I would rather not dedicate 8kB of memory to do a true double buffer.  I'm looking into using a 2kB buffer and refreshing it as necessary.

My biggest problem now is I missed the Coop so I won't be able to do any testing until the next Coop.

Greg,
I am in the coop for 1 hub and 8 controllers.  Once I get them assembled, you are welcome to barrow them.
Just let me know,
Jay

Thank you Jay but I think I was able to jump in the current Coop.  I requested 1 controller and 1 hub.  I received a PM requesting payment but it was for the wrong quantities.  I replied back requesting an updated cost based upon the correct quantities.  Hopefully it will get corrected.  Once I get the basic working I may contact you to do a bigger test/video.

OkieJay stopped by with one of his Lynx Express controllers so we can test it with the Helix.  It requires a custom cable (the instructions for the Helix to DMX cable are in the assembly manual).  I can now say that the Helix will control the Lynx Express.  Each Helix Main board can control up to three DMX universes.  If you have any other questions please let me know.

Greg,
If you can please add a link to insure everyone can see the Helix for themselves and see the pricing.  This may help direct traffic a little.

Thanks,

RJ

I am not sure what the surprise is that it would work with the express since all DMX stuff should work together. But threads wanting people to go to and use equipment from other sites normally are not thought too highly of by the sites owners.  And that is not just at DLA, I have had to ask DLA users to not do so before because they were posting on other sites trying to get the sites users to use our equipment.

Greg is a really nice guy and the Helix is supported, created on DIYC so please feel free to check it out.

I believe this post has served it purpose and so it is being locked.
