The Porch / Re: Solder Irons (Best for What we do)
« on: February 14, 2011, 09:31:04 am »
I bought just a cheapo unit from Radio Shack with a 15/40 watt setting and it works fine.  However, I would like to upgrade to a digital model like some shown on this thread.
To answer your question on a practice board--I had never soldered in my life, ordered some Express boards and watched RJ's videos and had absolutely no problems!!  Don't be afraid to get the part hot and you can just watch the solder "automagically" flow into the board!  It is pretty easy once you get the hang of it.
Good luck.

The Porch / Re: 2nd wire for christmas light string is plastic?

Yup, some of them are plastic, but in the same green color to blend in.  They are used to tie the lights on with.  I came across the same exact thing last year.    ::)

Lynx Smart String / Re: What will you use Smart Strings for?
« on: December 09, 2010, 09:13:40 pm »
My plan is to use them for world domination! (insert crazy man laugh here)     <yk..

Actually, I plan on replacing my 18 foot mega tree and running them along the eves of the house. And will probably do my arches with them as well, utilizing some sort of diffuser with them.

The Porch / Re: Anyone know what can be used for a water show like this?
« on: November 23, 2010, 08:18:21 pm »
These look to be laminar fountains---another great DIY!  I was going to try to figure out how to incorporate them here in Northern Nevada, but it is quite hard to keep the water from freezing at 10 below zero!  <fp.

Heres a link to the laminar forum---check them out. It is pretty cool.

Hello,
Has anyone worked with the Electroluminescent Wire that is sold on this sight?  They even have controllers for it! I think maybe the Lynx express would work with it after a change out of triacs. (part#771-Z0103MN-/T3 from Mouser).
Having never worked with the stuff, I thought I would seek the wisdom of this esteemed panel!  <pop..

thanks,

This is just way to cool!  When do you need beta testers?  Not that I am anxious to try it or anything.......but when do you need beta testers?     ;D
