Other Projects / Re: The Conductor, Where can I get one fast

Hey arw01, I don't know if I will have any videos or not this year.  I am so far behind and have had way to many problems.  I also spent all my money on lights!!  Not much left over for a video camera.  If I do end up with one I let you know.

Hey Tbone, I do not think they will run DMX.  I called a friend who is great with computers.  Said it is not the lack of the processor but that the usb ports have way to much information going thru them.  Switched to USB 3 and it helped a little. Looking in to other options for this year.  Thanks.  And by the way I will be using pixel net this year for the first time.  Thanks again for your post!!  Take care.

Other Projects / The Conductor, Where can I get one fast
« on: November 19, 2013, 09:29:25 pm »
I have been running LOR since 2007.  I am not to familiar with most of RJ's products.  However I met him at the Academy this past summer and he told he of a product call the conductor that could run shows that computers could not handle.

Well, got my lights up and the new computer can not handle my light load. I am running 12 CCR's  for a Superstar tree, 24 CCB's strings for two different mega trees, 5 more CCR's for arches and about 400 regular channels.  My computer is  Intel I-5,  3.3 gh with turbo to 3.7.  16 gig of memory and solid state hard drive.  It lags seriously.

So my question is where can I get a conductor?   Will it run my LOR sequences for now till I can switch over.  For now just want to save this years show.

Please help!
Thanks Ralph

Hey Mickpat,  I too plan on using the Revo  4 this year in my display.  Here is a thread on it in the LOR site  You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login I will be placing the unit on the roof of the house and aiming onto the lawn.  I used a dmx device this last year outdoors and It worked great.  I did build a waterproof  plywood box and placed plexiglass on the front of it to keep out the weather. I have yet to buy it, best price I've seen so far $249.00.

Another consideration,  I was planning to run LED C-9's along the front roof line.  If I find them on sale at $1.00 each and need 100 that is $400 for red, green, blue and white.  With no controller.  With LOR's  CCB at $200 Not only do I get the bulbs but I have a controller and any color I want.  It will save me a lot of money in this application and when they go on sale, the price will be around $160 for the 100 ccb.  Not bad.

Hey taybrynn,  Thanks for the info and on David's stuff.  I really like what I see here on DLA.  I am learning more about it and have some of the SS and SSC coming so I will see how they work but for the stars I'm still looking for the best way to light them.  That's why I was asking because I'm not very familiar with it.  Thanks again!!

WOW!!!  Dennis, That is a very good price for stares of that quality.  Thank You!  Now I don't have to make them.  Is the shipping a bit high?

I have been looking for options to make several stars on top of my Mega Poles and Mega Trees for next year.  I think one of the best I've seen so far are these, You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login.
I want to build each star with 4 or 5 stars each one getting larger as they move outward.   I would believe the best material would be the Rectangle Pixel Node: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login, but I have no idea what the size of each piece is?  Anyone know?

Another possible pixel would be the Flexible LED Strip

However I would have to do a lot of cutting and soldering, as with the rectangle pixel I would not have to do so.

What are the ideas out there that I have not seen, or if someone has done this before what is the best route in your opinion?

I have seen a video of some of the RGB pixels that David  Moore has used but I'm not sure how he controls his lights or where to find them.

Thanks for all the advice and help!!   Ralph

Awesome!!!  Thanks for all the helpful replies.  Lots of great information here.  When most of you started to solder did you use practice boards or just jump in?

Thanks again for all the help.  This group of DIYER's is the Best!!

The Porch / Solder Irons (Best for What we do)

I wanted to get your options on what you guys like to use for your soldering irons for the type of work we do.  I have soldered here and there and sometimes everywhere (not by choice).   Yet this will be the first time for PCB'S.     I have a soldering gun but need to get what is right for the job.  (Correct tools makes the job)

I have read the wiki, but it seems a bit lacking.

1. What type of Iron do I need, and what wattage?

2. Should I get a station Iron or not? (Would like to keep it under $150.)

3. Are there practice kits out there, and do I really need them?

4. Is .032 the best size solder for pcb's?

5.  Is there an online place to buy that has better prices than local stores?

Thanks for all the help and advise!!

Cool.  Thanks for the help.  I thought that would be the case but wanted to check.  Is the programmer, Picket3, available at mouser as well? Is it ready to go off the shelf?  I see this as becoming more that a hobby, but a way of life!!
